News and notes: Canucks trade Kalynuk, Filip Hronek out week-to-week, Stecher reunites with Markstrom, Tanev, Toffoli in Calgary
Bob Frid-USA TODAY Sports

The 2023 trade deadline has come and gone, and although there weren’t as many fireworks as some may have expected, there’s still some news and notes that we want to make sure don’t fly under the radar.

Canucks trade Wyatt Kalynuk

The Canucks’ final deadline day deal came shortly after the deadline had passed, with the club trading defenceman Wyatt Kalynuk to the New York Rangers in exchange for future considerations.

Kalynuk was signed this past offseason by the Canucks, and has four goals and 13 assists through 46 AHL games this season.

Troy Stecher reuintes with former Canucks teammates in Calgary

The Calgary Flames are back at it again.

After signing Jacob Markstrom, Chris Tanev, and Louis Domingue in the free agency period following the Canucks’ run in the 2020 bubble playoffs, the Flames have added another piece to the puzzle.

The Flames have acquired Stecher and Nick Ritchie from the Arizona Coyotes for Connor Mackey and Brett Ritchie (yes, Nick Ritchie and his brother have swapped teams).

Stecher joins his former Canucks teammates, including Tyler Toffoli, in Calgary following the deal. After the bubble season, Toffoli signed with the Montreal Canadiens, but was traded at last year’s trade deadline to the Flames.

Stecher, now 28, signed with his hometown Canucks following his collegiate hockey career with the University of North Dakota. The Richmond, BC native signed with the LA Kings after the Canucks chose not to qualify his contract following the playoff bubble.

The Flames currently sit five points outside of the final wild card spot in the Western Conference.

Filip Hronek out week-to-week

Filip Hronek is out week-to-week, according to Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin. The Canucks traded for Hronek on Wednesday, sending a first and second round pick to the Detroit Red Wings in a deal that caught many off guard.

Hronek said earlier this morning that he expects to play again this season, but didn’t divulge any details on the nature of his injury.

Allvin spoke at 1 PM today, and we’ll have a full breakdown of his post-deadline press conference dropping later this afternoon!
