The New York Rangers have trimmed their training camp roster down to 27, inching closer to the 23 man roster to start the season.

Per the team’s press release:

NEW YORK, October 3, 2021 – The New York Rangers announced today that the team has cut its training camp roster down to 27 players as Will Cuylle has been assigned to his junior team, the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), and Matthew Robertson, Braden Schneider, Lauri Pajuniemi, Tyler Wall, and Adam Huska have been assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Rangers trim camp roster to 27

After today’s cuts, the 27 players remaining in Training Camp are as follows:

Forwards (16): Morgan Barron, Sammy Blais, Filip Chytil, Julien Gauthier, Barclay Goodrow, Dryden Hunt, Kaapo Kakko, Vitali Kravtsov, Chris Kreider, Alexis Lafreniere, Greg McKegg, Artemi Panarin, Ryan Reaves, Kevin Rooney, Ryan Strome, Mika Zibanejad

Defensemen (9): Adam Fox, Libor Hajek, Zac Jones, Ryan Lindgren, Nils Lundkvist, K’Andre Miller, Patrik Nemeth, Jarred Tinordi, Jacob Trouba

Goaltenders (2): Alexandar Georgiev, Igor Shesterkin

The most interesting camp battle remains for the the 6th and 7th spots on defense. Currently, it appears Nils Lundkvist leads the pack followed by Zac Jones, Libor Hajek and Jarred Tinordi. From a realistic standpoint, if Lundkvist or Jones do not when the 6th spot they will be better suited to develop with the Wolf Pack.

Up front, the 13th forward is likely to come down to Morgan Barron, and Dryden Hunt. I would put Hunt as the leading candidate. Greg McKegg has been placed on waivers, that means we will be down to 26 on Monday.

Rangers lose Mason Geertsen

The Rangers placed F/D Mason Geertsen on waivers for the purpose of sending him down to Hartford. Today, the NJ Devils claimed the enforcer.

Geertsen is 6-4 and 221 pounds. He is considered one of the AHL’s best heavyweights and will certainly be a handful to deal with if he makes the Devils. The defenseman, who could also dress as a forward had 5 fights in the AHL shortened season in 2020-21 and 9 the season prior.
