Islanders’ Scott Mayfield undergoes season-ending surgery
Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Islanders announced Tuesday that defenseman Scott Mayfield underwent season-ending surgery.

“He is expected to make a full recovery and not have any issues with his summer training regiment,” the club announced on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The right-handed defenseman played 41 games for the Islanders this season, recording five assists and averaging 18:46 of ice time.

Mayfield, 31, was drafted in the second round by the Islanders in 2011 and has spent his entire 10-year career on Long Island.

In 469 career games, he’s recorded 25 goals and 91 assists for 116 points, averaging 19:10 of ice time. Last season, he hit career highs in all offensive categories, scoring six goals and 18 assists for 24 points while averaging a career high 21:02 of ice time.

Since the Islanders fired Lane Lambert and hired Patrick Roy in late January, the team has gone 11-11-4 in 26 games. In the standings, New York is 30-26-15 with 75 points, four points behind the Washington Capitals for the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.

However, they have lost seven of their last eight games, including a 4-0 shutout to the New Jersey Devils on Sunday. Their next game is Thursday on the road against the Florida Panthers, followed by the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday before heading to Pennsylvania for a Monday matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers.
