Hurricanes Re-Sign Goaltender Antti Raanta to One-Year Extension
James Guillory-USA TODAY Sports

The Carolina Hurricanes have solidified at least half of their goaltending tandem by re-signing veteran netminder Antti Raanta to a one-year contract extension worth $1.5 million. Raanta, who has proven to be a reliable presence in the crease, boasts a 910 save percentage in 27 games played. The deal is considered a cost-effective move for the Hurricanes, as Raanta continues to showcase his skills as a solid goalie.

Raanta’s per-game value and ability to accumulate wins are enhanced by playing for a strong team like the Hurricanes. He is expected to share goaltending duties with prospect Pyotr Kochetkov in the upcoming season, further strengthening Carolina’s goaltending tandem.

With Raanta’s extension, the Hurricanes’ salary cap situation stands at $17,323,083, with a current cap hit of $66,176,917. The team’s roster currently consists of 21 players, including 14 forwards, 5 defensemen, and 2 goaltenders.

While the Hurricanes have secured Raanta’s services, there remains the possibility of exploring additional options for their goaltending needs. The situation surrounding goaltender Frederik Andersen is worth monitoring, as it appears he is heading toward unrestricted free agency. The Pittsburgh Penguins could be a potential destination for Andersen, depending on the outcome of Tristan Jarry’s situation.

As the offseason progresses, the Hurricanes will continue to assess their goaltending situation and make any necessary adjustments to ensure they have a strong and capable tandem in the net for the upcoming season. Dan Rosen of NHL.com writes: “Hurricanes GM Don Waddell was confident about bringing back Andersen and Antti Raanta when we spoke earlier this week. Maybe something changed. Maybe Andersen wants to see what else is out there for him. If he leaves, Carolina could still go with Raanta and Pyotr Kochetkov.”
