Hurricanes hire former captain Justin Williams for front-office role

Justin Williams is returning to the Carolina Hurricanes but not as a player.

The Hurricanes hired Williams as an adviser to general manager Don Waddell, the team announced Friday.

“Justin has been a major part of the culture change that we’ve undergone here,” Waddell said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to add someone with his experience to our front office.”

Williams announced his retirement from the NHL in October after spending eight of his 19 seasons in Carolina. He helped the club capture a Stanley Cup in 2006 before winning titles with the Los Angeles Kings in 2012 and 2014.

The 39-year-old returned to the Hurricanes in 2017 and was named captain during the 2018-19 campaign. He first played for Carolina from 2003-09.

The three-time Stanley Cup winner notched 316 points (128 goals, 188 assists) in 449 games with the Hurricanes.
