Flames forward Martin Pospisil ejected from Monday’s game for hit on Vince Dunn
Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

Calgary Flames forward Martin Pospisil was assessed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for checking Seattle Kraken defenseman Vince Dunn from behind late in the third period of Monday’s game.

The incident occurred with 6:19 remaining in regulation time during Monday’s contest at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary. Dryden Hunt served the major penalty, which was upheld after a brief review.

Ostensibly on the forecheck in the offensive zone, Pospisil drilled Dunn from behind while attempting to knock the Kraken defender off the puck. Dunn went crashing into the end boards and immediately left the ice in apparent discomfort.

Dunn did not return to the game for the final few minutes of the third period. Brayden Pachal and Matty Beniers were assessed minor penalties for roughing after engaging in a scrum after the hit.

Pospisil, 24, has emerged this season with the Flames as a quality secondary scorer who plays with an edge. The Slovak forward has six goals, 15 points, and 72 penalty minutes in 45 games with the Flames this season.

The Flames originally selected Pospisil in the fourth round (No. 105 overall) of the 2018 NHL Draft. The Zvolen, Slovakia product appeared in 113 AHL games over parts of five seasons before making his NHL debut with the Flames earlier in 2023-24.

Pospisil dealt with numerous injuries during his tenure in the AHL, most recently being limited to just 20 games with the Calgary Wranglers last year and missing the entirety of the team’s run in the 2023 Calder Cup Playoffs.

In early February, Pospisil was assessed a game misconduct for a check on Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand in a scrum during the first period of a game at TD Garden. Pospisil did not receive any supplemental discipline as a result of the incident.

The Kraken defeated the Flames by a 4-2 score on Monday. Andrei Kuzmenko scored both goals for Calgary in the losing effort; Adam Larsson tallied the winning goal for Seattle early in the third period.
