Calgary Flames Sign Dube to 3-Year Contract Extension

The Calgary Flames were able to take another RFA off their board on Thursday, as they agreed to terms on a three-year deal with Dillon Dube that will have an AAV of $2.3 million.

Dube, 23, has been a part of the Flames organization since being drafted in the second-round (56 overall) of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. He played two more seasons of junior hockey for the Kelowna Rockets where he established himself as one of the league’s best offensive producers before turning pro in 2018-19. In his first professional season he showed his skill set at the AHL level with the Stockton Heat, scoring 15 goals and 39 points in 37 games, while also getting in 25 games at the NHL level where he had a goal and five points.

2019-20 saw Dube spend the majority of his time with the Flames, where in 45 games he had 16 points. He impressed in the playoffs that year, scoring four goals in 10 contests. In large part due to his performance in the postseason, Flames fans believed he was capable of big things in 2020-21. Unfortunately, he didn’t have the year some where hoping, scoring just 11 goals and 22 points in 51 games and was healthy scratched by head coach Darryl Sutter on multiple occasions.

While the AAV may have come in slightly higher than some expected, this is still a solid deal for the Flames and a nice job by general manager Brad Treliving as Dube still has tons of potential. Given the offensive abilities he’s shown through both his time in the WHL and AHL suggest he is a player that could really break out soon at the NHL level, perhaps even this upcoming season.

With this deal getting completed, the Flames have just one more RFA remaining in Connor Mackey. That is a deal that shouldn’t be difficult to be worked out and should be done soon, which is good news for the Flames as it appears they will have their roster set plenty of time ahead of training camp. The disappointing news for many fans of this team however is that there were no major changes made after a down 2020-21 season. If they are to struggle again this year you can expect to see some big changes in Calgary.
