Beyond the Boxscore: Calgary Flames can’t solve Stolarz 5v5 in loss to Florida Panthers

The Florida Panthers had themselves a fun afternoon at the expense of the new look Calgary Flames. They had a backup goaltender play some of the best puck of his entire career and maintained a long stretch of sustained pressure. It was not for a lack of effort the Flames lost, rather the Panthers just displayed more skill and more functionality as a team. Calgary should strive to be like they are when they get to the other side of their “re-tool.”

CF% – 44.68%, SCF% – 53.06%, HDCF% – 64.66%, xGF% – 58.25%

It’s a Team Game – Those numbers read off like things weren’t that bad. There were certainly times where Calgary had control of the flow, but the second period was where Florida showed they can turn things on. The relentless forechecking of the roster leads to the Flames committing egregious turnovers that lead to many of their goals against. At the other side of the rink the Flames funnelled chance after chance into Stolarz’s crease, but it was just his night. Even when they had him solved he managed to get the bounce and get a lucky save. Frustrating when you’re watching them need 4 goals and they can’t buy one.

Corsi King – In his debut with his new team Daniil Miromanov (59.13%) led in shot attempts disparity. In terms of raw chances, it was clearly Andersson (50.27%) and Weegar (47.14%) who had to do a lot of serious heavy minute damage. Miromanov was used as the number 5 defenceman in his first start – with some power play upside he could become someone the C of Red likes. Need to give him a few weeks to settle in before we really see what he’s all about. Overall the entire team did alright here, they were able to get their own chances they just couldn’t tuck them away.

Taken By Chance – I mean Miromanov (78.23 SCF% // 100 HDCF%) not letting a high danger chance against at 5v5 in his first game here, and being the only one on the team to do it, is a fantastic first impression. How about over 9 high danger chances during Rasmus Andersson’s (51.66% // 64.91%) minutes. Getting the chances wasn’t the hard part. Calgary had all their lines find some form of offence, at least enough to get shots off from in the blue paint. Stolarz’s performance cannot be understated – he was a massive factor in the outcome of the game.

xGF% – The team’s turnovers were pretty egregious when they occurred as well. I can preach about the goaltending all day but acknowledging that the Panthers were opportunistic on their turnovers is important as well. Calgary couldn’t make the Panthers pay yet Tarasenko can score 4 seconds after Huberdeau (58.81%) delivers him a pizza. The fourth line and both Kylington (71.82%) and Pachal (63.84%) deserve some praise for their standard of play. Oliver has taken the added minutes after the departure of the veteran UFAs and has not looked out of place. After being off for 20 months like he was to get back to that level in about 20 games really is special to watch.

In The Crease – It is not often someone else has out-duelled the Flames Vezina calibre netminder, but that happened in a big way in Sunrise. Stolarz had a 5v5 shutout of over 3.5 expected goals against. Markstrom letting in 3 on 2.76 should have had his team in a spot to at least press late but instead they get the performance of the other guys career. Getting goalied usually only applies when you were going to run away with it and the other guy steals the game away, in this case the Panthers goalie took what could have been a close game and made it look one-sided for the home team.
