2023-24 Maple Leafs predictions: Mitch Marner hits 100 points & wins the Selke Trophy
Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome back to episode two of our Maple Leafs 2023-24 predictions series! After a look into what next season will look like for Auston Matthews, we turn our attention to his linemate and best bud, Mitch Marner.

Marner’s had a busy summer getting married and you can’t deny he’s been nothing but lights out since entering the league in 2016-17. Look for this upcoming season to be the best of his career. He’s as motivated as ever to win a Stanley Cup in Toronto and with Matthews sticking around for the foreseeable future, look for these two to absolutely go off in 2023-24 and each enjoy massive seasons.

Prediction: Marner puts up 100 points and wins the Selke Trophy as the league’s best defensive forward

First off, this isn’t possible if Boston Bruins legend Patrice Bergeron doesn’t retire so, let’s give it up for his fine career. However, without him standing in the way, Marner will win the crown as the league’s best defensive forward.

Last season was quite the scene for #16 as he led the team in scoring with 99 points and finished third in Selke votes, behind the winning Bergeron and New Jersey Devils’ forward Nico Hischier. In 2023-24, Marner will put Hischier in the rear view.

I’m fully expecting to see Marner’s game continue to evolve. He’s fine tuned it over the course of the last seven seasons and it’s as complete as they come. Some would argue he’s the most complete player in the entire league, but others would be quick to pick a centre instead. Regardless, you can’t deny the fact Marner’s hockey IQ is off the charts and it’s his commitment and work ethic that sets him apart. He knows he’s capable of influencing the outcome on both sides of the puck and it shows. Marner rarely gives up on a play and he’s not afraid to do whatever it takes to win.

Marner’s ability to influence the game with his 200-foot play is second to none. He’s a takeaway king because of the way he uses his body positioning and quick hands to get on the inside of players and create leverage. He’s the smartest player on the ice every time he’s on the ice and it’s wild how much impact he can have in all situations.

It doesn’t matter if the game is on the line and the team needs one, or if the Leafs just need to hold off a buzz saw for the last minute, Marner is on the ice and he’s likely dead smack in the middle of the play.

The NHL should be on notice. #16 for the Maple Leafs is going to take his game to new heights and he’s going to win the Selke trophy next season.

Marner’s Poised for a Monster Season

With another season of playing alongside Matthews and likely Tyler Bertuzzi, look for Marner to elevate his game and the numbers will benefit. He’s never hit 100 points and while he certainly came close last season, 2023-24 will be the year.

Expect to see Marner shooting more. He’s tried to work on his shot the past two summers, looking to build enough confidence in his wrister. He didn’t shoot the puck enough last season and look for him to get off his shot more and for Matthews’ assist numbers to benefit as well. The power play in Toronto will look a little different next season and should be among the league’s top-three units. This will help #16 pad the stats and reach the century mark. There’s also a very good chance Matthews’ gets off to a hot start lighting the lamp and if he’s able to once again hit the 60-goal mark, Marner is going to be involved in most celebrations.

The 2023-24 season will be Marner’s best to date. 100 points and some new hardware. Book it.
