Wyatt Teller Is the Most Valuable Guard in the NFL

The recognition that the Browns offensive line gets is pretty rare. Normally offensive linemen's performances go relatively unnoticed because they don't get the football, they don't show boat, and they are just "get your job" done guys. In the case of the Cleveland Browns, this group has been so good for the last four years that they are recognized for it quite a bit. This time around, it is Wyatt Teller.

Pro Football Focus calculated the WAR of each guard in the NFL and Wyatt Teller came out as the top-rated guard in all of football.

What even is WAR and how do they come up with the number?

WAR stands for "Wins Above Replacement." It is calculated the following five steps completed in this order:

  1. Determine how well a player plays over a given period of time (generally a season) by using their weekly PFF Grades
  2. Map the player's production and equate it to a "wins" value by using the importance of each facet of the play
  3. Simulate the team's expected performance with said player and with an average player in his place (take the difference between the two)
  4. Determine the average player's wins above the replacement player
  5. Add the two digits of steps three and four together to get the player of interest's WAR

Those five steps are a fancy way of saying that PFF compares Wyatt Teller's grade to an average player. They then take that average player, calculate that player's WAR over a bad player then add it all together to get Teller's WAR.

WAR, in many sports, is often referred to as the most useful stat when determining a player's value. The number takes into account all of their plays, not just the highlights and lowlights.

Teller's grade so far this year ranks him as the most valuable guard in all of the NFL this season. It's he and his interior running mates, Ethan Pocic and Joel Bitonio, that have pulled this offense along. They need to continue their elite play if this team wants a chance at making the playoffs.
