Why Romeo Doubs is best set up to Davante Adams' replacement

The Green Bay Packers were hoping to add a couple of playmakers this offseason at the wide receiver position after the losses of Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who both went to the AFC West. Especially because of what Adams did in his time in Green Bay, the team needed to find some sort of potential replacement for him.

They may have found that replacement in fourth-round pick Romeo Doubs. The former Nevada star has been having a great camp so far for the Packers. However, he hadn’t gotten an opportunity to show his talent in a live game situation…until Friday night.

Doubs proved how much potential he has to be great in Green Bay for Matt LaFleur and Co. in Friday night’s preseason opener against the San Francisco 49ers. Doubs caught three passes on seven targets for 45 yards and one touchdown. On many of his routes (he ran 15 total routes), including the 33-yard touchdown, Doubs immediately proved how much of a threat he is before the play is in motion. 

His footwork and agility allow him to shake the defender and create immediate separation. It was a dominant performance from the standpoint of him getting open. It’s almost like he and Davante Adams share a lot of similarities. Both California natives. Both All-Mountain West performers. Both were picked after the first round.  Both have very strong route-running abilities. However, Doubs (4.4 40-yard dash time) is a faster player. He is also taller (6-2). So, not only is he a great replacement for Adams, but he could exceed expectations in the wake of Adams’ departure. He has all the physical characteristics to be successful and it shows.

Looking at 2022, Romeo Doubs is off to a really great start as a rookie. He figures to be a huge part of the Packers' offense when it comes to the passing attack.

Green Bay will need to beat teams collectively instead of targeting one player an awful lot as they did with Adams each of the last few seasons. They will use the likes of Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb, free agent addition Sammy Watkins, second-year receiver Amari Rodgers, rookie Christian Watson and Doubs to help give the Green Bay offense balance.  

If Doubs plays as he did on Friday night for the majority of the season, the Packers could very well be playing in Arizona this February.
