Why John Lynch Should Speak for the 49ers and Jed York Shouldn't
USA TODAY Sports

Jed York used to be the face and the voice of the 49ers until he hired John Lynch.

You see, York's parents technically own the team, but they don't want to live in California or run the team or be held accountable, so they gave it to their son when he was in his 20s and let him handle the press conferences.

He didn't do well.

So in 2017, the 49ers hired Lynch to be the general manager, even though he had zero experience scouting or acquiring personnel. It seemed the 49ers hired him primarily to speak publicly for the team, considering he went to Stanford, he's a Hall of Fame player and he was a broadcaster, too. Meaning he speaks well and he's respected.

So for the past seven years, Lynch has done most of the talking while York mostly has stayed out of the spotlight, to his credit.

Until this past Thursday. York simply couldn't wait any longer.

He decided to speak to the media because the 49ers are heading to the Super Bowl. And in typicaly York fashion, he made everything about himself. Took the focus away from the Super Bowl. Talked about playing catch with his son in a luxury suite during the NFC Championship game and told stories that made him head coach look questionable.

So the next day, Lynch had to do the same press conference that York messed up. And when Lynch did it, he actually talked about the future, which is the Super Bowl, not the past, which is irrelevant.

Thanks goodness the 49ers have Lynch.
