Why Giants icon wants team to lose to Eagles

New York Giants icon and retired wide receiver Amani Toomer is among those who support the franchise but want to see the team lose to the 11-5 Philadelphia Eagles in this coming Sunday's season finale.

"The draft pick is something that everybody doesn’t want to talk about, but I want to talk about (it)," Toomer explained during a Tuesday morning appearance on ESPN New York, as shared by Manuel Gómez of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. "I don’t think we should win this last game because, you know, what is it for?"

Per the Tankathon website, the Giants enter Week 18 holding the fifth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post noted Tuesday that New York is still mathematically alive to "earn" the draft's second overall choice that theoretically could be used to acquire a replacement for quarterback Daniel Jones such as Caleb Williams of the USC Trojans or North Carolina Tar Heels signal-caller Drake Maye.

Jones likely will remain with the Giants through this coming offseason, but they reportedly can escape his contract as soon as after the 2024 campaign. He suffered a season-ending torn ACL on Nov. 5 but is working toward getting himself ready to play in Week 1 this coming September.

"...This is business," Toomer added during the radio segment. "And the business of the game says you find that rookie quarterback that you think you can build around for two or three or four years. And with that pick, and with that extra money, you go out and get some free agents."

Toomer may not get his wish considering the Eagles seem to be an absolute mess at this point of the season. With that said, DraftKings Sportsbook listed the Giants as five-point underdogs for this Sunday's matchup as of Tuesday afternoon.
