Watch: Highlight-reel catch shows why Tank Dell is already Texans No. 1 WR

As Houston Texans quarterback Davis Mills took a shotgun snap on a 1st-and-goal from the New England Patriots 6-yard line in Thursday’s preseason opener, he knew exactly who he wanted to throw to.

Mills never took his eyes off receiver Tank Dell — his primary read on the play — as he hit the 23-year-old rookie with a back-shoulder throw in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown second-quarter touchdown.

Dell juggled the ball as he laid on the turf, eventually corralling it in while fighting off two Patriots defenders.

"He's great, electrifying," Mills told reporters after the game. "I think that's the best way to describe him. He's going to make guys miss in tight windows and when he catches a short pass, he's going to try to score anywhere he gets it on the field. It's exciting having a guy like that on the edge who you never know what's going to happen, but he's a big-play guy."

Dell’s touchdown catch was indicative of the kind of performances that have become the norm for the University of Houston alum during training camp, and it reinforced what many have suspected since rookie minicamp — not only is Dell is a natural playmaker, but he may already be the Texans best receiver.

"We've seen him make a lot of plays throughout training camp — some of these same plays (like the touchdown catch),” Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said. “So, it was good to see him do the same thing here in a game. He can be an explosive playmaker for us, and we look forward to him continuing to make some of those plays."

Dell finished the exhibition with five receptions on eight targets for 65 yards and a score. No other Texans receiver was targeted more than three times. His 24-yard reception with under three minutes left in the first half not only ignited the eve-play, 62-yard scoring drive but it was also Houston’s biggest play of the game.

In drafting Dell, the Texans may just have the big-play weapon the offense has been lacking since trading DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals three years ago. The 5-foot-8 rookie wideout led the NCAA last season with 1,398 yards and 17 touchdowns, and his 109 receptions were second-most behind Purdue’s Charlie Jones.

“He's a great player; I can't wait to see what we do together,” rookie QB C.J. Stroud added.
