Watch: Carlson’s 61-Yard Field Goal and More From Packers Camp

It’s easy to see why the Green Bay Packers like kicker Anders Carlson. It’s also to see why there’s perhaps a little worry within the organization.

Before Thursday’s practice at training camp, the sixth-round draft pick drilled a 61-yard field goal with plenty to spare. (See the first clip in the video.) Yes, the ball was placed on sticks rather than being held. Yes, there was no rush. Yes, this was a pressure-free pre-practice routine. But the ball explodes off Carlson’s right foot.

However, points are scored by splitting the uprights. Carlson made 4-of-6 in live situations. For camp, he’s 16-of-27 on field goals. That’s a putrid 59.3 percent success rate, though it must be noted that he hasn’t attempted a kick from extra-point distance (38 yards) or shorter.

Carlson is the only kicker on the roster, but he knows competition is just a phone call away.

“No matter who’s here, it’s always me vs. myself,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if there is competition or there’s not. It’s about putting your best day forward.”

Up next is Saturday’s Family Night, when Carlson will truly be under the microscope. It will be his first time kicking in Lambeau Field, the place where Mason Crosby made so many big kicks over the course of 16 seasons.

“Very excited,” he said. “I’ve never seen it, but I’ve heard a lot of good things. Excited for some field goals and some fireworks.”
