Vikings Named Potential Destination For Joe Flacco
Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

If the Minnesota Vikings do not re-sign quarterback Kirk Cousins in free agency, they could turn to Joe Flacco.

ESPN’s Tony Grossi mentioned the Vikings as a potential landing spot for Flacco in the event that they are able to provide him with a cushier situation than the Cleveland Browns.

“I believe Flacco would come back to the Browns unless he finds a better opportunity to play elsewhere. Where might that be? I’m watching Minnesota,” Grossi wrote. “If the Vikings aren’t able to re-sign Kirk Cousins, I think they’d be interested in Flacco.”

Minnesota expressed interest in Flacco back at the trade deadline in October and also inquired about signing him off the Browns’ practice squad before he was elevated to the roster in December.

Flacco started five games for Cleveland this past season, throwing for 1,616 yards, 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 60.3 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 90.2. That was good enough to win the 39-year-old the Comeback Player of the Year award.

Most importantly, Flacco went 4-1 in his starts and led the Browns to the playoffs.

It should be noted that Flacco regressed in the postseason, throwing a couple of pick-sixes in what ended up being a blowout loss to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Round.

However, he showed during the regular season that he still has something left in the tank and could represent a viable option as a stopgap for a team like the Vikings.

That is, of course, if Minnesota lets Cousins walk.

The general expectation all along has been that the Vikings will re-sign Cousins, but recent developments have changed things to the point where Cousins staying in Minnesota is far from a slam dunk.

If Cousins takes his talents elsewhere, Joe Flacco could be the Vikings’ next signal-caller.
