Vikings listed as best fit for star free agent safety Antoine Winfield Jr.

Could the Vikings go after the top safety on the free agent market this year? It would be quite the story if they're able to sign Antoine Winfield Jr., the Buccaneers' first-team All-Pro safety who starred at Minnesota — and whose father spent nine years with the Vikings. It would also be a massive move for Brian Flores' defense.

Recently, Bleacher Report's Alex Ballentine listed the Vikings as the best fit for Winfield in a piece on the top 25-and-under free agents this offseason. 

One (team) that should be particularly interested is the Minnesota Vikings. From a sheer football standpoint, Winfield fits in with what they do on defense. Like Todd Bowles' system in Tampa Bay, Brian Flores has brought a blitz-happy approach to Minnesota that relies on multiple looks and blitz packages to wreak havoc. Winfield's ability to play all over the field would give Flores someone to weaponize within his scheme.

Then there's the obvious off-field connections that could make Minnesota attractive. Winfield was a Minnesota Golden Gopher in college, and his dad, Antoine Winfield Sr., played for the Vikings for nine years.

There's no doubt that Winfield would be a monumental addition for the Vikings. He's one of the best, most versatile defensive playmakers in the entire NFL, finishing sixth in defensive player of the year voting this past season after truly stuffing the stat sheet. Winfield, who can line up all over the place and do everything at a high level, finished 2023 with 122 tackles, 12 passes defended, six sacks, six forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, and three interceptions.

However, even if the Vikings would be a good theoretical fit — assuming Harrison Smith retires or is a cap casualty this offseason — for Winfield, it seems highly unlikely that it ends up happening. The Bucs presumably won't let the 2020 second-round pick actually hit the market; if they don't work out a long-term extension, they could use the franchise tag to keep him in Tampa in 2024.

If Winfield does end up hitting the market, the Vikings — and all 30 other teams — should be very interested in his services. He'd likely command at least $18-$20 million per year on a new contract. But a franchise tag appears to be the most likely outcome.
