Titans release veteran offensive lineman after repeated practice fights

NFL coaches are not usually very happy with training camp or practice fights, and they are especially not happy when they keep happening with fringe roster players.

Veteran Tennessee Titans offensive lineman Jamarco Jones found that out the hard way this week.

The Titans waived Jones on Thursday after he had been involved in multiple training camp fights, including one that nearly started a full-scale brawl. Titans head coach Mike Vrabel was especially annoyed with one of Jones' hits that caused one of the fights when he hit Chance Campbell with a blindside block.

Vrabel said "You don't want to practice like that" and acknowledged it would be a penalty in a game

Jones was also involved in a skirmish with two-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons. Both players were dismissed from practice and had to run sprints as a punishment.

Jones was originally a fifth-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks in 2018 and has started seven games during his career. He did not play at all during the 2022 season due to injury and entered camp this season in a competition for the starting right tackle spot. He opened camp getting first-team reps, but he obviously squandered that opportunity.

On one hand, you can understand why Jones would be playing with some extra physicality and passion. He is fighting for a job and plays a position where toughness is everything. There is no doubt an incentive to display that, send a message and get noticed. But there is also a very thin line that you do not want to cross when it comes to that sort of play with your teammates -- especially your Pro Bowl teammates -- in training camp.

Jones crossed that line one too many times for the Titans. He will now be a free agent.
