Three reasons why Marquise Brown is the perfect fit for the Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs made a splash on Thursday night, agreeing to a one-year deal with wideout Marquise "Hollywood" Brown. 

Brown finished with 51 catches for 574 yards and four touchdowns with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and should be a welcome addition for quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense. 

Here are three reasons Brown might be the perfect fit for the wide receiver-needy Chiefs. 

Brown should help Chiefs drop issues 

The Chiefs battled through a dropping epidemic in 2023, leading the NFL with 2.6 drops per game. While it didn't end up derailing another Super Bowl run, it was clearly something the team aimed to fix this offseason. 

The good news is that Brown rarely drops a pass. While the move might underwhelm some, the former first-round pick comes equipped with some of the surest hands in the league. Last season with the Arizona Cardinals, he recorded a drop rate of 3% while boasting a career mark of 3.6%. 

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes showed visible frustration with his receivers last season, and it was evident he lost faith in the unit. But, considering Brown's resume, it shouldn't take long to earn the two-time MVP's trust. 

Chiefs are getting a steal 

With cornerback L'Jarius Sneed's future up in the air, many believed the Chiefs would first have to solve that situation before making waves in free agency. Luckily, Brown comes to them on the cheap. 

According to Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star, Brown's one-year contract is worth $7M but can rise to $11M if he meets incentives. 

The $11M the Chiefs could pay Brown is roughly the same amount they gave Marquez Valdes-Scantling per season over a three-year, $30M deal. Meanwhile, it's also less than the three-year, $39M deals wideouts Gabe Davis and Darnell Mooney received on the open market this offseason. 

Chiefs offensive philosophy should let Brown shine 

Brown has not played in a pass-first offense over his five-year NFL career. That's about to change with the Chiefs. 

Having Mahomes throwing you the ball will already lift your game. However, as analyst Warren Sharp pointed out, Kansas City's offensive philosophy offers Brown the best opportunity to succeed.

While with the Baltimore Ravens (29th) and Arizona Cardinals (16th), Brown played on offenses with 51% and 54% pass rates. Meanwhile, the Chiefs have finished atop the league every season since 2019, boasting a 64% pass rate in 2023.
