Texans reportedly sign RB Rex Burkhead to one-year extension

Little has gone right for a Houston Texans side that essentially lost its starting quarterback well before the season began, that sits at 4-12 ahead of the Week 18 game versus the Tennessee Titans and that likely has more questions than answers as it pertains to completing its latest rebuild.

One positive aspect of the roster has been running back Rex Burkhead, who originally joined Houston via a one-year deal worth up to $1.5 million last June. It appears Burkhead and the Texans are happy to continue their relationship.

Per ESPN's Sarah Barshop and Aaron Wilson of Texans Daily, Burkhead has signed a contract extension that links him with Houston through the 2022 campaign.

According to ESPN stats, Burkhead is on track to end the season as the team's leading rusher and has tallied 403 yards and three touchdowns on 110 carries across 15 contests. ESPN also notes, though, that the Texans rank dead last in the NFL with 1,358 total rushing yards and 84.9 rushing yards per game, and they're tied for last with 3.4 yards per carry.

"We’ll definitely do that," head coach David Culley recently said about improving the team's rushing attack during the upcoming offseason, via Wilson. "We obviously want to be better at that, we’re going to be better at that. That’s one of the things that when the season is over, during the offseason we’re going to sit down as a staff and we’ll go through, and not only with just our staff with our scheme, but also personnel-wise as to which direction we need to go and what we need to do to get it right, and we’re going to get it right."
