Steelers should consider reuniting Kenny Pickett with former Pitt teammate

Many believed there was a chance of a Pitt reunion on the Steelers during the 2023 NFL Draft when WR Jordan Addison was there for the taking. Although that isn't how things played out, a reunion of former Pitt teammates could still happen.

On Tuesday, the Texans waived center Jimmy Morrissey, who spent three seasons snapping the ball to QB Kenny Pickett at the University of Pittsburgh. The Steelers should strongly consider adding the 25-year-old.

Pittsburgh still has a need for a backup center and Morrissey could be the perfect last-minute addition with the experience and comfort both players have playing together.

Morrissey showed promise as the recipient of the 2020 Burlsworth Trophy, which is annually presented to the most outstanding player in college football who began his career as a walk-on. But things haven't worked out as he had hoped in Houston.

The Steelers have Mason Cole as their starting center, but after trading Kendrick Green and waiving Ryan McCollum, the team could still add another center to its roster.

As of now, offensive lineman Nate Herbig is the likely replacement if Cole were to go down, but he has been a little banged up through training camp and the preseason.

Morrissey could not only take over the backup role but has also shown versatility by playing guard on the offensive line.

Pittsburgh may even be able to stash Morrissey on the practice squad as it already has nine offensive linemen on the 53-man roster.

The Steelers have been aggressive this offseason under new general manager Omar Khan. So, don't be surprised if Pittsburgh decides to add Morrissey or another capable backup before the start of the 2023 season.
