Steelers receive approval to expand international reach

The Steelers may have the best traveled fans in the NFL but that hasn't stopped them from growing the team's reach outside of the United States.

Pittsburgh announced Tuesday that it plans to expand its marketing to the island of Ireland through the NFL's global markets program.

"We are excited to have been granted the rights to engage more deeply with our fans in Ireland," president and CEO Art Rooney II said in a statement. "My family has deep roots throughout Ireland and being able to connect with our fans across the island is something special to our organization."

The NFL continues to make a strong effort to grow its brand outside of the Unites States and the Steelers expanding their reach to Ireland only adds to that.

There are five international games this season, with two being played in Germany and three in London. However, Pittsburgh is not one of the teams scheduled to play in one of the five international contests.

The Steelers are just in their beginning stages of reaching fans in Ireland, creating the official Twitter account Tuesday as well. But it feels likely the country will host an NFL game someday and Pittsburgh should be a frontrunner to make the trip.
