Steelers' Best 5 Free Agent Targets That Are Still Available
Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a splash before free agency even began by agreeing to sign former Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson. As free agency has heated up and star players are leaving their former teams and getting lucrative deals, the market is loaded with high-value players.

The Steelers still have a good bit of needs, and Omar Khan has shown he's not scared to make a splash. They have saved a lot of money with their quarterback situation and can spend elsewhere to build out the most formidable roster. Here are five exceptionally talented players the Steelers should target, chosen based on situational needs, value, and overall talent.

Patrick Queen

Queen, a 24-year-old linebacker, has been making waves in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens. His standout performance in 2023 earned him his first Pro Bowl nod, boasting impressive stats with 133 combined tackles and three and a half sacks.

Known for his hard-hitting style and abundant talent, Queen would be a significant acquisition for the Steelers if they could steal him from the Ravens. While linebacker might not be the most critical position to address, the Steelers experienced a slew of injuries during the 2023 season, highlighting the need for depth in that area. The opportunity to add a talent like Queen would undoubtedly justify the investment required.

Justin Simmons

Simmons is coming off a stellar Pro Bowl season with the Broncos. At 30 years old, he boasts a two-time Pro Bowler status and impressive stats, including 70 combined tackles, three interceptions, and eight pass deflections in 2023. Despite his age, Simmons brings a wealth of experience and exceptional talent to the safety position, potentially complementing Minkah Fitzpatrick's playstyle seamlessly.

The Broncos were forced to release Simmons due to the dead cap owed to Wilson following his lucrative contract two years ago. Notably, Simmons led the NFL in interceptions during the 2022 season and still has plenty of prime football left in him. Bringing him to Pittsburgh would undoubtedly ignite excitement among Steelers fans.

Tyron Smith

This player's name sparks interest. Smith has consistently performed as one of the league's top offensive linemen in recent seasons, yet he has grappled with injuries and now stands at 33 years old. With eight Pro Bowl appearances and two All-Pro selections under his belt, he boasts an impressive resume. Spending all 13 of his NFL seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, Smith is now a free agent, presenting both a significant name and a notable risk.

His recent struggles with injuries over the past four seasons raise concerns, but if the Steelers can secure Smith at the right price, he could significantly bolster their offensive line. Considering the expected reliance on the run game in 2024, Smith's proficiency in opening holes at the line of scrimmage could prove invaluable. Perhaps the Steelers should take a calculated gamble on this seasoned player who could provide leadership to an offensive line in need of improvement.

Coleman Shelton

Shelton earns his spot on this list due to the Steelers' urgent need for a new center. Having served as the starting center for the Los Angeles Rams over the past two seasons, he has proven to be reliable. With the market for centers dwindling, the Steelers might see Shelton as a viable option to alleviate pressure heading into the draft.

It's crucial for them to enter the draft with robust alternatives at the center position. Shelton, though somewhat underrated, could offer solid value as a center and provide a safety net for the Steelers. At 28 years old, Shelton should remain a name to keep an eye on this free agency.

Tre'Davious White

White stands out as one of the more prominent names on this list. Despite being 29 years old and having battled injuries in recent years, the Buffalo Bills opted to release the former All-Pro cornerback. While the Steelers have great confidence in Joey Porter Jr., they lack reliable options beyond him at the cornerback position.

It's pivotal for the Steelers to secure another cornerback, especially considering the depth in this free agency class. Although White has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons, his talent is undeniable when he's healthy. While his price tag may exceed what the Steelers initially planned to spend, the potential payoff is significant. A healthy pairing of Porter and White would undoubtedly pose a formidable challenge for opposing offenses.

Steelers' Current Needs To Fill During Free Agency

In this free agency period, the Steelers are strategically targeting key positions to bolster their roster. With a focus on safety and cornerback, they aim to fortify their defensive backfield, ensuring greater coverage and defensive strength. Additionally, prioritizing the acquisition of a center and offensive tackle will provide vital support for their offensive line, enhancing protection for Wilson and facilitating a more dynamic offensive scheme.

As free agency unfolds, Steeler Nation will eagerly monitor the destinations of these talented free agents. The Steelers remain committed to enhancing their roster as they strive to reclaim their status among the NFL's top contenders.
