Son of Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Famer gets selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Chargers selected offensive tackle Joe Alt with the No. 5 overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Alt is the son of Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame offensive tackle John Alt. The Chiefs selected John in the first round of the 1984 NFL Draft. He was an All-Pro selection in 1990 and made the Pro Bowl in 1992 and '93. He started 149 games over the span of his 13-year NFL career.

Joe Alt will now follow in his father's footsteps as he begins his NFL career with the Chargers. Joe was the consensus No. 1 ranked offensive lineman in the draft and was often linked to the Chargers throughout the draft process. Los Angeles drafted OT Rashawn Slater last year and played him on the left side, meaning Alt will likely play on the right.

Joe Alt has big shoes to fill, but certainly has the skillset to do it. He could very well be a thorn in the side for the Chiefs for years to come. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is now protected by one of the best offensive lines in football. It will be a treat to see Alt match up with K.C. pass rushers such as Chris Jones, George Karlaftis, Mike Danna and Charles Omenihu.
