Seattle Seahawks hiring Jay Harbaugh as special teams coordinator

Despite reports that Jay Harbaugh would be following in his father’s footsteps from Michigan to Los Angeles to coach the Chargers, according to Albert Breer, the Wolverines special teams coordinator will actually be taking on the same role with the Seattle Seahawks instead. Harbaugh will work under former Baltimore Ravens coordinator Mike Macdonald who took the Seahawks job last week.

Harbaugh spent all nine seasons of his father’s tenure in Ann Arbor on the Wolverines’ staff. He spent most of that time working on special teams as the assistant or the coordinator for the unit. However, he also got to work with the tight ends, running backs, and, most recently, safeties.

During his time with the group, Harbaugh coached some of the better special teams in college football. Whether overall or individual honors, Michigan saw several recognitions and records for their kickers and punters, in their return game, and for their coverage off punts and kicks.

Harbaugh started his career as a graduate assistant working with special teams at Oregon State from 2008 to 2011. After that, he got his first opportunity at the professional level as an intern in the scouting department during his father’s first stop with the San Francisco 49ers. He then spent three years with his uncle, John Harbaugh, as a quality control coach on offense for the Baltimore Ravens.
