San Francisco 49ers Punt Returner Ray-Ray McCloud III: Sounds Off on Twitter

Ray-Ray McCloud III took exception to a spectator blaming him for his team’s loss during Super Bowl LVIII. The Twitter user known as @iam_johnw called McCloud’s “muffed punt” the reason quarterback Brock Purdy failed to win the Lombardi Trophy on Sunday. McCloud responded to the Twitter user, saying, “If you don’t know football, don’t speak about the play! Cuz that’s not a muff, goofy boy!”

The punt in question was neither a muff nor a fumble credited to McCloud. Despite McCloud calling off a return, the Tommy Townsend boot hit 49ers corner Darrell Luter in the ankle, forcing a fast-reacting McCloud into action. Unfortunately, the punt returner could not corral the ball as it took an unorthodox bounce off his teammate’s leg. The Chiefs’ Jaylen Watson recorded the fumble, with two-time MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes hitting wideout Marquez Vadles-Scantling for the team’s first touchdown.

The San Francisco 49ers fell short to the Kansas City Chiefs in last night’s Super Bowl, 25-22. The turnover on the punt was not San Fran’s only significant miscue, with star running back Christian McCaffrey losing a fumble during the game’s first drive. The 49ers were amid a 46-yard drive before McCaffrey coughed up the ball, resulting in a turnover near the red zone. The fumble proved costly, with San Francisco failing to score until the second quarter. Meanwhile, a missed 49ers extra point also played a significant role in the game going to overtime.

However, one of those prominent reasons for the 49ers’ failure in Super Bowl LVII was the inevitable greatness of Kansas City gunslinger Patrick Mahomes. The Texas Tech product led the Chiefs on a 64-yard game-tying field goal drive to end regulation. He followed it up with a 13-play, 75-yard drive ending in a walk-off touchdown pass to wideout Mecole Hardman.
