Saints agree to contract terms with Pro Bowl safety Tyrann Mathieu

Tyrann Mathieu is returning to the Big Easy.

The New Orleans native and former LSU superstar has agreed to contract terms with the New Orleans Saints, ESPN reported Monday morning. Details of the contract have not yet been made public.

Mathieu, who turns 30 this month, became a free agent in 2022 after three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs that garnered him two All-Pro nods and two Pro Bowl honors. He was also part of the Chiefs' 2020 Super Bowl-winning team.

The Philadelphia Eagles also reportedly interviewed Mathieu, but the Saints made a stronger offer in an effort to beef up their depleted defense. New Orleans lost safeties Marcus Williams and Malcolm Jenkins this offseason, but have added Marcus Maye and now Mathieu to new head coach Dennis Allen's roster.

Mathieu, who was selected in the third round of the 2013 draft by the Arizona Cardinals, is tied for fifth in the league with 13 interceptions over the past three seasons with Kansas City. He has 26 interceptions -- three of which were returned for touchdowns -- 76 passes defended, 610 tackles, and 10 sacks in nine seasons for the Chiefs, Cardinals and Houston Texans.
