Report - Steelers Hiring Multiple Offensive Assistants; Keeping Mike Sullivan In Different Role
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced their decision to part ways with wide receivers coach Frisman Jackson, revealing their choice for his replacement in the process. Zach Azzanni, former New York Jets wide receivers coach, is poised to assume the role, according to Gerry Dulac.

Steelers' Offensive Coaching Staff Continues To Improve

Jackson, who served with the Steelers for two seasons, did not have his contract renewed, paving the way for a new addition to the coaching staff. The selection of Azzanni underscores the Steelers' dedication to bolstering their offensive coaching lineup as they prepare for the upcoming season.

In tandem with Azzanni's appointment, the Steelers have also secured the expertise of Tom Arth, a former assistant with the Los Angeles Chargers, to serve as their quarterbacks coach. These strategic hires signify the Steelers' commitment to fortifying their coaching ranks and refining their offensive strategies.

Discussions are currently underway regarding a potential new role for former quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan, indicating the Steelers' active efforts to reshape their coaching staff in pursuit of offensive optimization.

As the Steelers gear up for the 2024 season, the addition of Azzanni brings a fresh perspective and extensive experience to the team. With his proven track record and adeptness in developing wide receivers, Azzanni is positioned to make a significant impact on the Steelers' offensive game plan.

Steelers fans have another reason to rejoice with the addition of Arth to the team. With a proven track record of nurturing talent, exemplified by his role in developing the Chargers' young standout quarterback, Justin Herbert, Arth brings invaluable expertise to Pittsburgh. Now, he's set to work his magic once again, this time focusing on unleashing the full potential of 2022 first round draft pick, Kenny Pickett.

Azzanni, who spent just one season with the Jets, boasts an impressive 26-year tenure coaching wide receivers. His last six seasons were dedicated to refining the offensive group with stints with the Denver Broncos and the Chicago Bears, following an illustrious 18-year journey at the collegiate level.

Throughout his coaching career, Azzanni has garnered widespread acclaim, particularly at the NFL level, where his adeptness at developing and mentoring young receivers shines. His extensive resume, spanning both college and NFL coaching, underscores his prowess and readiness for the challenges ahead. He takes on no easy task with having to now come in and coach the talented but often troubled wide receivers Diontae Johnson and George Pickens.

On the other hand, Arth, a former college quarterback, made his mark as a backup in the NFL for a couple of seasons, albeit without taking to the field during an official game. Transitioning to coaching, he served as the passing game specialist for the Chargers for two seasons.

In 2022, under Arth's guidance, the Chargers soared to become the third-best passing offense in the league. Additionally, Arth has wielded his expertise as a head coach at the collegiate level, contributing a wealth of offensive knowledge to bolster the Steelers' arsenal.

The Steelers, grappling with offensive struggles in recent years, are primed for change. Head Coach Mike Tomlin's commitment to his vision of rejuvenating the team with seasoned external coaches reflects in the acquisitions of Azzanni and Arth. This offseason has witnessed a departure from the norm for the Steelers, signaling a resolute determination to remedy the ailing offense and reignite their pursuit of Super Bowl glory.
