Report: Baker Mayfield has yet to receive contract offer from Browns

The Cleveland Browns reportedly have yet to offer Baker Mayfield a contract extension.

According to The Athletic's Jeff Howe, Mayfield and the Browns have a positive relationship and have not ruled out opening contract discussions during the 2021 campaign. The Browns have not yet made an offer because they want to see Mayfield produce in Kevin Stefanski's offense "over a longer stretch of time," Howe adds.

Mayfield is under contract through the 2022 season, with the Browns exercising his $18.8 million fifth-year option for next season.

The 2018 No. 1 pick is expected to land a lucrative extension following the Buffalo Bills' decision to sign Josh Allen to a six-year, $258 million deal with $150 million guaranteed, which is the most in NFL history.

There were questions about Mayfield's ability to be Cleveland's franchise quarterback. However, he silenced the doubters last season by leading the Browns to their first playoff appearance since 2002.

The 26-year-old went 11-5 last season, completing 62.8% of his passes for 3,563 yards and 26 touchdowns against eight interceptions.

Despite a 33-29 Week 1 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last weekend, Mayfield had a solid showing, completing 21-of-28 passes for 321 yards and an interception.

The Oklahoma product will need to be better in Week 2 against the Houston Texans, but the Browns have no doubt he'll continue to improve throughout the season.

In addition to Mayfield, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is also eligible for a contract extension. The Browns might be waiting to see what the former MVP receives before making an offer to Mayfield, though that's unclear.
