Report: 3 Potential New York Giants Cap Casualties This Offseason
Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Giants had a season to forget in 2023. After making a surprising run to the divisional round the year prior, the Giants finished with just a 6-11 this season. Now, they have to take a long look at where their team stands.

This includes deciding what personnel to keep and what personnel to dump. Right now, the Giants are expected to have nearly $28 million in cap space. So, who may the Giants be better without? These are three players that New York could dump to clear salary cap space.

1. Mark Glowinski (G)

One of the easiest players to make an argument to dump for cap reasons is Giants G Mark Glowinski. The entire offensive line had a miserable season. That is because the Giants led the league in sacks allowed by a wide margin. It even resulted in the Giants hiring a new OL coach.

On top of this, Glowinski will take up over $5 million in base salary next season if he remains on the roster. However, if the Giants were to release Glowinski, it would only be $1.5 million in dead cap. Considering the Giants already have serious problems with the offensive line, clearing up salary cap space to improve the line could be seen as a bonus.

2. Darren Waller (TE)

One of the most controversial players to address this offseason is TE Darren Waller. Last year, the New York Giants made a splash by acquiring Waller. Unfortunately, Waller did not work out the way the Giants hoped this season.

Waller had just 552 receiving yards and one touchdown reception. Waller’s numbers were a far cry from 2020. Back then, he had 1,196 receiving yards and nine touchdown receptions.

What does this mean for the salary cap? Well, Waller’s salary situation is more complicated than Glowinski’s. That is because he has about $35 million in base salary remaining over the next three years.

However, the Giants have the option to get out of that contract this offseason. If they choose to do so, it would be just under $8 million in dead cap next season.

This is honestly a tougher call. While Waller is not cheap, he is still regarded as one of the better tight ends in the NFL. Plus, he was dealing with multiple injuries throughout the season. For those reasons, the Giants may choose to run it back with Waller.

3. Xavier McKinney (S)

Finally, we have Giants S Xavier McKinney. This may also be polarizing due to the reported drama that McKinney had with members of the Giants’ coaching staff this season. Some may argue that this is no longer an issue now that former DC Wink Martindale parted ways with the Giants.

However, McKinney was playing on a rookie contract. Now, he is an unrestricted free agent. Considering McKinney had three interceptions and two fumble recoveries this past season, McKinney’s services are likely going to be more expensive next season.
