Ravens Name Ex-Jaguars Assistant Zach Orr as DC
USA TODAY Sports

Shortly after losing star defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald to the Seattle Seahawks, the Baltimore Ravens have a new top defensive coach. And he is one Jacksonville Jaguars followers should remember.

After spending three seasons as a linebacker for the Ravens, Zach Orr joined the Ravens' defensive staff as an analyst in 2017, where he spent the next four years.

Then, Orr left Baltimore for the first time and became the Jacksonville Jaguars' outside linebackers coach under head coach Urban Meyer and defensive coordinator Joe Cullen, who he followed from Baltimore.

After Meyer's disastrous season led to a reboot in Jacksonville, Orr returned to Baltimore as inside linebackers coach, leaving behind plenty of fans inside the Jaguars' locker room and organization.

Now, the former Jaguars assistant is set to take over the NFL's best defense.

"Zach is a homegrown Raven in every way," Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said in a statement. "His energy, intelligence, work ethic and strong communication skills have been on display since the day he joined our organization as a player in 2014. From making our team as an undrafted rookie, to becoming an All-Pro linebacker, then later transitioning to an assistant coach who helped mentor multiple Pro Bowl defenders, Zach has excelled at every level of his football journey.

"He knows our players and understands our standard as well as anyone. I'm confident that he is prepared to take on the challenge of continuing to develop our players and scheme as our next defensive coordinator."
