Ravens have done their homework on intriguing defender they could soon be taking in the NFL Draft
Butch Dill-USA TODAY Sports

Just a few days are left until the NFL Draft takes place and we are no longer talking about what teams may do.

Following a rather quiet free agency for the most part, the Baltimore Ravens have a total of nine draft picks to use this week to help build the 2024 roster out.

One player who is interesting and has come about as a potential target for the Ravens is LSU DT Maason Smith. He is a player that the Ravens have indeed visited with ahead of the draft.

Smith has met with the New Orleans Saints, Cincinnati Bengals, Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Jets, New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills, Green Bay Packers, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, and Seattle Seahawks additionally.

The Ravens often find themselves building in the trenches on both sides of the ball and the interior of the defensive line is somewhere they could look to add to in this draft. Smith is a player that has high potential and he has shown that at times while at LSU, but his durability is a concern. The former Tiger missed the entirety of his sophomore season in 2022 with an injury.

As a freshman, Smith had four sacks and 19 tackles in seven games played during the 2021 season. Following the injury in 2022, the defensive tackle was able to put together 28 tackles and 2.5 sacks as a junior in 2023.

Smith was once a member of Bruce Feldman’s Freak’s list for hitting 19.5 mph on the GPS and having a vertical that can touch 11 feet. Though he is athletically gifted, Smith struggled on the bench with just 21 reps and his 3-cone time of 7.62 was not special.

On tape, Smith brings a high motor that follows a first step that is quick off of the line of scrimmage. Both are calling cards to him winning his reps at times. His ability to lineup at different alignments would be a positive to drafting him too.

Overall, if the Ravens want to take a swing on Smith it should come after the third round and no later than the fourth round. If Smith can stay healthy, this may end up being a steal.
