Rams Exec: 'Well Past Time' For Spagnuolo's Second Chance

With their third Super Bowl victory in five years, the Kansas City Chiefs are officially a dynasty as coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes continue to receive plenty of rightful praise.

If there's an unsung hero for the Chiefs, though, it would have to be defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Now five years into his tenure in Kansas City, Spagnuolo may have pulled off his best coaching job this season as the Chiefs ranked second in total and scoring defense. He capped off his exceptional season with another great showing in Super Bowl LVIII, not giving the San Francisco 49ers many opportunities to take advantage of.

Between his three Super Bowls with the Chiefs and one with the New York Giants in 2007, Spagnuolo is now the first coordinator in NFL history to win four rings.

Despite all his success as a coordinator, Spagnuolo has only had one chance to be a head coach, that being with the St. Louis Rams from 2009-2011. Spagnuolo went 10-38 in three seasons with the Rams, although the team around him was a disaster during his tenure.

It's now been 13 years since Spagnuolo was a head coach, and according to Los Angeles Rams COO Kevin Demoff it's about time he gets another shot. Demoff, who was hired the same year as Spagnuolo, responded to All-Pro receiver Tyreek Hill asking why "Spags" hasn't gotten any interview requests with a passionate endorsement for the coach.

"It is well past time to see Spags get another head coaching opportunity," Demoff wrote on X. "The team & organization he inherited in STL was a mess, nobody could have had success. Yet he changed the culture/staff & players believed. An amazing human deserving of the real shot we couldn’t give him."

Demoff then continued to defend Spagnuolo in a series of posts explaining why the Rams were a "mess" during that time, but he made a strong case with his first post alone.

It's worth noting that Demoff gave similarly high praise to Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris this offseason, and he's now the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Perhaps Demoff's endorsement could get more teams to give Spagnuolo a serious look if his performance this season didn't do that already.

"Maybe, just maybe he deserves a real shot," Demoff wrote.
