Raiders Free Agents: WR Deandre Carter
© Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports

The Las Vegas Raiders already had a talented wide receiving corps when they signed wide receiver Deandre Carter last offseason. However, Las Vegas' previous coaching staff saw value in the veteran receiver, who was coming off arguably his best season as a professional and did so with Las Vegas' divisional opponent, the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Raiders signed Carter to a one-year deal worth nearly $2.5 million last offseason after Carter registered 46 receptions for 538 yards with the Chargers. He would also add 339 punt return yards on 29 attempts and 497 kickoff return yards on 26 attempts.

During his first season in Las Vegas, Carter found himself near the bottom of a talented wide-receiving unit featuring All-Pro Davante Adams and veteran receivers Jakobi Meyers and Hunter Renfrow. Las Vegas' roster also contained other pass-catching options at different positions, such as rookie tight end Michael Mayer. This left few, if any, receptions on the offensive side of the ball for Carter, at no fault of his own.

Carter was brought in to add to an already talented roster at his position. Realistically, Carter was expected to have more of an impact on Las Vegas' kickoff and punt return game than he was expected to have on the offense itself, which was the result for Carter this season.

While Carter had one of his better seasons as a professional in Las Vegas as both a kickoff and punt returner, Carter only posted four receptions for 39 yards on the season for Las Vegas' offense. His lack of production as a receiver was a microcosm of the Raiders' offense this season, especially the first eight weeks, as the Raiders struggled to find much success on offense.

With many things yet to be figured out for the Silver and Black heading into next season and the emergence of wide receiver Tre Tucker, the Raiders could lean more heavily on Tucker in the return game next season or use the draft and free agency to find a cheaper replacement for Carter in that area.
