Philadelphia Eagles' updated roster after a wild first week of NFL free agency and trades
Kim Klement Neitzel-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles made their presence known during a wild first week of NFL free agency.

General manager Howie Roseman did what he does best and checked off a majority of the team's top priority needs and even made a trade for Jalen Hurts' backup quarterback.

With most of the big moves out of the way, let's take a look at the current state of the Eagles' roster and where things are likely to go from here.

Note: Asterisks (*) represent a 2024 free agent addition and does not include a re-signed player. Offense's base personnel is projected as 11-personnel (3 WRs, 1 TE) and defense's base personnel is projected as 4-3 base defense (four down lineman, three linebackers).

Quarterback (3)

Presumed starter(s): Jalen Hurts
Backup(s): Kenny Pickett*, Tanner McKee

How we got here: The Eagles left backup quarterback Marcus Mariota to walk in free agency and he found a new home with the Washington Commanders. That left the Eagles looking for Jalen Hurts' next backup and they found him in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In exchange for quarterback Kenny Pickett and a 2024 fourth-round pick (No. 120 overall), the Eagles sent Pittsburgh their 2024 third-round compensatory pick (No. 98 overall) and a pair of 2025 seventh-round picks.

Running Back (3)

Presumed starter(s): Saquon Barkley*
Backup(s): Kenneth Gainwell, Lew Nichols

How we got here: With D'Andre Swift out the door, Howie spent some big bucks on upgrading the Eagles' backfield in free agency. The Eagles signed Saquon Barkley to a three-year deal worth up to $46.75 million with $26 million guaranteed. Kenneth Gainwell and Barkley will carry the load while second-year back Lew Nichols works as an emergency depth piece.

Wide receiver (9)

Presumed starter(s): A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, DeVonte Parker
Backup(s): Britain Covey, Austin Watkins Jr., Jacob Harris, Shaquan Davis, Joseph Ngata, Griffin Herbert

How we got here: The Eagles addressed their No. 3 wide receiver need and inked DeVante Parker to a one-year, $4.69 million fully guaranteed deal. They actually won the lottery as they only had to pay $1.2 million of that deal while the Patriots took care of the rest. He'll take the place of Quez Watkins.

Tight end (4)

Presumed starter(s): Dallas Goedert
Backup(s): Grant Calcaterra, Albert Okwuegbunam, Noah Togiai

How we got here: The Eagles haven't touched this position much, aside from re-signing Albert Okwuegbunam to a one-year deal. For now, it looks like they are confident in Dallas Goedert and Grant Calcaterra to lead the tight end room.

Offensive line (11)

Presumed starter(s): Jordan Mailata (LT), Landon Dickerson (LG), Cam Jurgens (C), Tyler Steen (RG), Lane Johnson (RT)
Backup(s): Fred Johnson, Matt Hennessey*, Brett Toth, Lecitus Smith, Darian Kinnard, Le'Raven Clark.

How we got here: Eagles' longtime center Jason Kelce retired ahead of NFL free agency. The Eagles added versatile offensive lineman Matt Hennessey behind new starting center Cam Jurgens. They also locked in Landon Dickerson

Defensive line (11)

Presumed starter(s): Brandon Graham (DE), Jordan Davis (DT), Milton Williams (DT), Josh Sweat (DE)
Backup(s): Bryce Huff*, Julian Okwara, Jalen Carter, Malon Tuipulotu, Tarron Jackson, Moro Ojomo, Thomas Booker IV

How we got here: The Eagles made one massive signing to bolster their defensive line, signing former New York Jets defensive end Bryce Huff to a three-year, $51.1 million deal. Philly also restructured Josh Sweat's deal rather than trading him.

Linebacker (11)

Presumed starter(s): Devin White (MLB), Nakobe Dean (MLB), Haason Reddick (SLB)
Backup(s): Nolan Smith, Nolan Ellis, Ben VanSumeren, Brandon Smith, Terrell Lewis, Zack Baun*, Oren Burks*, Patrick Johnson

How we got here: The Eagles added three new faces to their linebackers group, Devin White, Zack Baun and Oren Burks. These signings came after the report that the Eagles are looking to trade Haason Reddick away. Linebacker was one of their weaker positions last year so you can expect them to bolster it even further in the draft.

Cornerback (7)

Presumed starter(s): James Bradberry (LCB), Darius Slay (RCB)
Backup(s): Zech McPhearson, Kelee Ringo, Eli Ricks, Josh Jobe, Tiawan Mullen

How we got here: The Eagles didn't do much here in free agency, but it's definitely a lock that they're going to address this position in the draft with one of their eight picks.

Safety (4)

Presumed starter(s): C.J. Gardner-Johnson* (SS), Reed Blankenship (FS)
Backup(s): Tristan McCollum, Sydney Brown

How we got here: The Eagles needed an upgrade at safety and did that on Day 2 of free agency, signing familiar face Chauncey Gardner-Johnson to a three-year deal worth up to $33 million. You can expect the Eagles to look to bolster their safety position even further in the draft.

Specialists (4)

Presumed starter(s): Jake Elliott (K), Braden Mann (P), Rick Lovato (LS)
Returners: Britain Covey (PR/KR)

How we got here: The Eagles showed their kickers some love, signing Jake Elliott to a longer deal and re-signing Braden Mann and Lovato to new deals. With Britan Covey as the only returner still on the roster, it will be interesting to see what the Eagles do with Boston Scott or Quez Watkins.

Where do things go from here?

Rostered players: 67
Spots available: 24

The Eagles' biggest question mark heading into the second week of NFL free agency and ahead of the draft is at cornerback.

Next up would be another safety, center, linebacker, EDGE, right guard and some quality tight end depth.

But with eight draft picks, including three in the first 100, the Eagles will have plenty of opportunities to solidify their roster even more.
