Patriots Sign OL McDermott to Active Roster - Pats Tracker
Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports

NOV. 25 PATRIOTS SIGN OL CONOR MCDERMOTT TO 53-MAN ROSTER, FILLS VACANT SPOT LEFT BY WILL GRIER RELEASE The New England Patriots have signed offensive tackle Conor McDermott to their 53-man roster in advance of their Week 12 matchup against the New York Giants.

McDermott fills the roster spot vacated by quarterback Will Grier, whom the Patriots released on Saturday morning. His signing may have implications for the Pats plans at tackle against the Giants on Sunday, as both starting left tackle Trent Brown (ankle) and veteran swing option Riley Reiff (knee) are listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report

Though he was drafted by New England, McDermott did not play a regular season snap for the team during his first tour of duty in New England. Despite sending picks 216 and 239 sent to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for 2017’s pick no. 211, McDermott was released by the Pats during final roster cut downs in September of his rookie season. Shortly thereafter, the ex-UCLA Bruin was claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Bills, with whom he spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

The 6-8, 310-pound lineman remained in the AFC East after being claimed off waivers by the New York Jets. McDermott appeared in 35 games and made six starts for the Jets from 2019-2021. He was released by the Jets on Oct. 17, 2022, but quickly re-signed to the practice squad.

McDermott was signed by the Patriots in November off the New York Jets practice squad. The 30-year-old started all six games he played for New England in 2022, allowing eight pressures without surrendering a sack. Still, the 31-year old was released by the team with an injury designation during final roster cuts in late August.

Due to a rash of injuries along their offensive line, McDermott was signed to the Pats scout team in mid-October. Having appeared in two games as a game-day elevation, he logged 127 snaps on offense, while being whistled for only one false start penalty.

NOV. 25 PATRIOTS CUT WILL GRIER; STARTING QB REMAINS MYSTERY It's still anyone's guess as to who will start under center Sunday against the New York Giants, but we know it won't be Will Grier.

That's because the Pats cut Grier Saturday morning, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Grier, 28, joined the Pats in September off the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad. While he was the backup in a few games this year, he never saw the field. This leaves Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe as the only quarterbacks left on the Pats roster.

The opening on the 53-man roster will likely be filled by an offensive lineman: Either Conor McDermott from practice squad or Riley Reiff coming off injured reserve.

NOV. 21 PATRIOTS RETURN TO PRACTICE, PERFECT ATTANDANCE? -  The New England Patriots were back on the practice fields for the first time since their lone bye-week session last Wednesday as they prep for a Week 12 contest with the New York Giants at 1 p.m. on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

The Patriots enjoyed full attendance at practice on Tuesday afternoon, as both starting left tackle Trent Brown and hybrid runner/receiver Ty Montgomery were back in action, despite missing last week’s session.

Still, all eyes were on the quarterbacks, as coach Bill Belichick indicated that every player on his roster should be prepared to play when the Pats take the field against the Giants this weekend. Both Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe took reps, with Jones receiving a slightly higher number of first-team snaps. Neither third-stinger Will Grier, nor scout team signal-caller Malik Cunningham were observed taking any snaps at quarterback during the portion of practice open to the media.

While both Belichick and offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien have been expectedly cryptic when asked to name New England’s starting quarterback, it should be noted that Jones is scheduled to speak with the media on Wednesday afternoon — a time typically reserved for the given team’s starting quarterback. Though the rule is not steadfast, Jones’ availability and subsequent remarks will be worth monitoring in the next 24-48 hours.

The Patriots will be back on the field on Wednesday before taking a one-day respite to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. The team will return on Friday for their final practice session of the week.

NOV. 16 PATRIOTS WR KENDRICK BOURNE UNDERGOES ACL SURGERY, SET TO BEGIN REHAB -Less than one month removed from suffering a season-ending injury, New England Patriots receiver Kendrick Bourne is on the road to recovery.

In fact, he might be taking the fast lane.

According to a Thursday morning NFL Network report, Bourne underwent successful surgery on Wednesday  to repair his torn ACL.  The surgery was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles.

Bourne suffered the injury on the first play of the fourth quarter of New England’s Week 8 loss to the Miami Dolphins while attempting to secure a third-and-9 at the Pats 16-yard-line. He had been the Patriots’ top receiver this season with 37 catches for 406 yards with four touchdowns. He caught three for 36 yards and a touchdown before departing what could have been his final game as a Patriot.

Bourne is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old is expected to remain in L.A, where will rehab with a variety of NFL veterans. As added by Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald, Bourne is currently performing initial rehab at the same facility used by New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers — who is making remarkably rapid progress in his comeback attempt from a torn Achilles’ tendon suffered in Week 1.

NOV. 14 FORMER NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS CB JACK JONES CLAIMED OFF WAIVERS BY LAS VEGAS RAIDERS - Just one day removed from being waived by the New England Patriots, second-year cornerback Jack Jones has found a new NFL home.

The Las Vegas Raiders have claimed Jones off waivers from the Patriots, according to his agent Jamaal Tooson. Jones is reunited with Antonio Pierce, his coach in high school at Long Beach Poly and in college at Arizona State.

Jones joined the Patriots as a fourth-round pick (No. 121 overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft. Early on, he caught the eye of Patriots fans with his athletic, high-octane style of play. However, injuries, legal troubles and engagement issues prevented Jones from fulfilling his expectations in New England.

Due to his familiarity with Pierce, Jones is expected to make an immediate impact on the Raiders secondary.

NOV. 14 REELING PATRIOTS SUFFER HISTORY-MAKING LOSS - With a record of 2-8, Patriots fans are left scratching their heads trying to remember the last time their team was in such shambles. Last Sunday's loss in Germany only added to the illogical disappointment.

In the 10-6 loss to the Colts, the Pats rushed for 167 yards. Seemingly not that impressive, except that the specific combination hadn't lost a game in 266 tries. That's right, NFL teams rushing for at least 150 yards and allowing its opponent 10 points or less had won 266 consecutive games until New England took its circus act to Frankfurt.

Long known for nothing but winning, these Patriots are inventing ways to lose.

NOV. 13 PATRIOTS CLAIM RB JAMYCAL HASTY OFF WAIVERS FROM JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS - The New England Patriots have claimed running back Jamycal Hasty off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Hasty joined the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Baylor in 2020. He signed a contract with the San Francisco 49ers, where he would spend time with both their practice squad and eventually the 53-man roster.

After being released by the Niners during the 2022 preseason, Hasty was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 27-year-old appeared in all 17 games for the Jaguars and rushed for 194 yards on 46 carries (4.2 YPC) to go along with 20 receptions for 126 yards receiving and three total touchdowns. He also added 97 kick return yards on special teams. Despite being signed to an extension by the Jags during the offseason, Hasty’s playing time began to diminish due to the emergency of both Tank Bigsby and D’Ernest Johnson. He was subsequently waived by Jacksonville on Nov. 11.

Hasty will fill the spot on the Pats 53-man roster vacated by cornerback Jack Jones, who was waived by the team on Monday.

NOV. 12 PATRIOTS FRUSTRATING SHOWING ON OFFENSE VS. COLTS LEADS TO HEATED MAC JONES-BILL O'BRIEN SIDELINE EXCHANGE - The New England Patriots continue to turn promising opportunities into heartache as time slips away in their bid for a comeback against the Indianapolis Colts at Frankfurt Stadium in Germany.

While subpar pass protection from their offensive line, and the inability for receivers to gain separation have played their part, the output from quarterback Mac Jones has been a true lowlight for the Pats against the Colts on Sunday. The third-year starter has completed 15 of 20 passes for 170 yards having absorbed five sacks and one costly fourth-quarter interception, in which he seemingly had both tight end Mike Gesicki and receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster open in the endzone.

Accordingly, Jones' miscues have led to his getting an earful from his offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien

Jones, who had his share of controversy with former OC Matt Patricia, now has drawn O'Brien's ire.

Perhaps Robert Kraft's reaction best sums up the Pats efforts in Frankfurt:

NOV. 12 PATRIOTS LIST SIX INACTIVES, COLTS DECLARE FIVE FROM FRANKFURT, GERMANY - The New England Patriots (2-7) are set for their Week 10 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts (4-5) at Frankfurt Stadium from Frankfurt, Germany

The Pats enter this matchup hoping to earn their third victory of the season, following their 20-17 loss to the Washington Commanders last week. Conversely, the Colts are hoping to even their record at .500, after a 27-13 victory over the Carolina Panthers in Week 9.

Rookie receiver Kayshon Boutte is active for the first time since Week 1. However, the Pats have deactivated linebacker and team captain Ja’Whaun Bentley for this game, leaving a significant void in the middle of their defense.

With just over an hour until kickoff at 9:30 a.m. ET, the Patriots and Colts have released their lists of inactives:

PATRIOTS INACTIVES:

WR DeVante Parker

OT Trent Brown

CB J.C. Jackson

LB Ja’Whaun Bentley

CB Alex Austin

DE Sam Roberts

Will Grier — Emergency Third Quarterback

COLTS INACTIVES:

CB JuJu Brents

TE Drew Ogletree

LB Cameron McGrone

G Arlington Hambright

G Jack Anderson

NOV. 11 PATRIOTS ELEVATE OT CONOR MCDERMOTT, LB CALVIN MUNSON FROM PRACTICE SQUAD FOR WEEK 10 - The New England Patriots have promoted a pair from their practice squad in anticipation of their Week 10 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts at Frankfurt Stadium in Germany,

McDermott was also promoted from the scout team for New England’s Week 9 loss to the Washington Commanders, as well as their Week 8 defeat at the hands of the Miami Dolphins. McDermott’s presence will add both depth and positional insurance, as starting tackle Trent Brown will not play against the Colts on Sunday. The veteran tackle also subbed for Brown against the Commanders, providing stout protection of Mac Jones’ blindside. Through 64 offensive snaps played, McDermott has yielded neither a sack, nor committed a penalty.

Munson has been a Patriots practice squad regular since 2018. However, he also spent time on the active roster with the Miami Dolphins from 2019-2021. Munson has been a special teams mainstay throughout his pro career. However, his versatility and ability to align at various linebacker positions earned him a spot within the Pats' positional rotation. Munson was also elevated for the Patriots opening-week loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, as well as their Week 2 matchup with the Dolphins. Sunday will mark his third and final eligibility for game day elevation.

NOV. 9 PATRIOTS LT TRENT BROWN BACK AT PRACTICE PRIOR TO GERMANY DEPARTURE - With just hours remaining until traveling to Frankfurt, Germany for their Week 10 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts, the New England Patriots welcomed back a sizable presence to the practice fields.

After missing Wednesday’s session due to both personal reasons, as well as a lingering ankle injury, Patriots starting left tackle Trent Brown was present during the media portion of practice on Thursday. Despite being limited in action, his presence provides hope that he will to make the trip with the team to Germany.

Despite some injury issues throughout the season, Brown has remained a stalwart along the Pats offensive line. He has aligned at left tackle for 431 snaps on offense, while starting all seven games in which he has played. Brown has only been whistles for one false start penalty this season, while allowing only two sacks — earning him an 81.4 overall positional grade from Pro Football Focus. In Brown’s absence during the Pats Week 9 loss to the Washington Commanders, veteran tackle Conor McDermott played in his stead.

With Brown’s return, cornerback J.C. Jackson (personal reasons) was the only Patriots missing from Thursday’s session. Both New England and Indianapolis will issue their respective injury and practice participation reports on Thursday afternoon at approximately 4 p.m. ET.

NOV. 7 PATRIOTS RE-SIGN WR T.J. LUTHER TO PRACTICE SQUAD - The New England Patriots have added some speed and depth to their scout team re-signing receiver T.J. Luther, per a report from the Boston Herald.

Luther, an undrafted rookie, originally signed with the Patriots on Sept. 1, as a practice squad receiver. During his time at Gardner-Webb University he caught 86 passes for 1,550 yards and 12 touchdowns in 20 games for the Bulldogs. His 18.0 yards-per-catch average is a school record for players with a minimum of 80 receptions. The 5-11, 198-pound receiver also posted a fleet-footed 4.4 40-yard time.

In fact, New England was so impressed by his speed that they hosted him on a Top-30 visit at Gillette Stadium in the spring. He joined the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent following the draft, where he spent the entirety of training camp and the preseason. Luther was a member of the pats scout team until they released him on Oct. 18. Luther’s speed and system knowledge provide the Pats with another potential game day elevation at receiver.

NOV. 6 PATRIOTS HOST DEFENSIVE LINEMEN CARL DAVIS, DAVIYON NIXON FOR WORKOUTS - The New England Patriots worked out a pair of defensive tackles at Gillette Stadium on Monday, one of which is quite familiar to Pats Nation.

Per the NFL's transaction wire, the Pats hosted both Daviyon Nixon and Carl Davis, Jr. for visits, just one day removed from the team's 20-17 loss to the Washington Commanders, which dropped them to 2-7 on the season.

During his three years (2020-22) in New England, Davis played in 36 games, making seven starts. He has earned 33 total tackles (three for loss), two sacks, two quarterback hits and a fumble recovery. The 6-5, 320-pound Iowa product routinely proved his value within the system as a two-gapping interior defensive lineman. Besides providing size and strength up front, he also became a disruptive presence when defending the outside zone. When properly in position, he has the ability to defend against a double team, allowing the Pats’ defensive ends and edge rushers to flow freely to the ball. Despite being a favorite among his teammates and coaches, Davis was released by New England ahead of the NFL’s 53-man roster deadline in August. Since that time, he had been a member of the Seattle Seahawks practice squad.

Nixon was a fifth-round selection (No. 158 overall) by the Carolina Panthers in 2021 out of Iowa Western Community College. The 24-year-old has appeared in 14 career games, having compiled 15 tackles and one combined sack. Nixon was waived by the Panthers in Dec. 2022. The 6-3, 305-pound lineman subsequently signed with the Seahawks, before being waived again just one week later.

NOV. 6 DANIEL JONES OUT FOR SEASON WITH TORN ACL - New York Giants starting quarterback Daniel Jones will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his right knee. Jones suffered the injury on Sunday in the Giants' 30-6 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Jones was trying to escape a sack from Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby when his right knee buckled and he fell immediately to the ground. Jones, who signed a lucrative contract last offseason, also missed three games due to a neck injury.

He'll miss the Giants hosting the New England Patriots Nov. 26 at MetLife Stadium. The Pats will either face Tyrod Taylor (who is on IR with a rib injury but would be eligible to return against the Patriots), Tommy DeVito or Matt Barkley.

NOV. 5 PATRIOTS LIST FIVE INACTIVES, COMMANDERS DECLARE SEVEN - The New England Patriots (2-6) are set for their Week 9 matchup with the Washington Commanders (3-5) at Gillette Stadium.

The Pats enter this matchup hoping to earn their third victory of the season, following their 31-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins last week. In kind, the Commanders are also hoping to rid themselves of their recent woes and a 38-31 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 8.

With just over an hour until kickoff at 1 p.m. ET, the Patriots and Commanders have released their lists of inactives:

PATRIOTS INACTIVES:

WR DeVante Parker

WR Kayshon Boutte

CB Alex Austin

OT Trent Brown

DT Sam Roberts

Will Grier — Emergency Third Quarterback

COMMANDERS INACTIVES:

WR Curtis Samuel

C Ricky Stromberg

CB Tariq Castro-Fields

T Alex Akingbulu

G Noah Laufenberg

TE Curtis Hodges

WR Mitchell Tinsley

NOV. 4 PATRIOTS SIGN DE JEREMIAH PHARMS JR. TO 53-MAN ROSTER, ELEVATE OT CONOR MCDERMOTT - The New England Patriots have signed defensive tackle Jeremiah Pharms, Jr. to their 53-man roster. The 6-3, 300-pound lineman had been a member of the Pats practice squad. He was elevated from the scout team for New England’s Week 4- 6 matchups, against the Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints and Las Vegas Raiders respectively.

The Patriots have also elevated offensive tackle Conor McDermott for their Week 9 matchup with the Washington Commanders on Sunday at Gillette Stadium. McDermott was also promoted from the scout team for New England’s Week 8 loss to the Miami Dolphins. McDermott’s presence will add both depth and positional insurance, as starting tackle Trent Brown is listed as questionable with both ankle and knee injuries, while reserve tackle Vederian Lowe is also questionable with a knee injury.

Pharms is a versatile interior lineman who logged 22 tackles and two sacks for the Pittsburgh Maulers of the USFL in the spring of 2022. He was a notable contributor during training camp practices and played 22 snaps in the Pats preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders on Aug 26. He spent the entirety of last season on the Pats scout team, as well as the first three weeks of the 2023 regular season. Despite his three game-day promotions, Pharms registered only one tackle during New England’s Week 5 loss to the Saints.

Pharms’ signing fills the spot vacated by receiver Kendrick Bourne, who was placed on season-ending injured reserve earlier this week due to a torn ACL.

NOV. 2 PATRIOTS REPORTEDLY SIGN CB ALEX AUSTIN TO 53-MAN ROSTER - The New England Patriots are adding to cornerback room in advance of their Week 9 matchup with the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

Rookie Alex Austin will reportedly be signing with the Patriots according to a Thursday morning report from Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report.

Austin was a seventh-round draft selection by the Buffalo Bills earlier this year. The 22-year-old played in all three of Buffalo’s preseason contests, logging eight tackles while aligning as both an outside cornerback and special teamer.

After being released by the Bills in late August, Austin was claimed off waivers by the Houston Texans. The 6-1, 191-pound product of Oregon State played in three games for the Texans as a game day elevation. Yet, he was released from their practice squad on Wednesday.

Austin fills the 53-man roster spot vacated by receiver Kendrick Bourne, who was placed on season-ending injured reserve earlier this week.

OCT. 29 PATRIOTS LIST FIVE INACTIVES, DOLPHINS DECLARE FOUR - The New England Patriots (2-5) are set for their Week 8 matchup with the Miami Dolphins (5-2) at Hard Rock Stadium.

The Pats enter this matchup hoping to earn their second consecutive victory, following their 29-25 win over the Buffalo Bills last week. Conversely, the Dolphins are fresh off a 31-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 7.

With both Tyquan Thornton and Kayshon Boutte inactive, receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster will return to the lineup after missing the past two games while in concussion protocol. Sunday marks the first healthy scratch of the season for Thornton, the Pats second-year wideout.

With just over an hour until the 1 p.m. ET kickoff, the Patriots and Dolphins have released their lists of inactives:

PATRIOTS INACTIVES:

T Calvin Anderson

LB Josh Uche

T Vederian Lowe

WR Tyquan Thornton

WR Kayshon Boutte

Will Grier — Emergency Third Quarterback

DOLPHINS INACTIVES:

WR Robbie Chosen

S Jevon Holland

CB Xavien Howard

DT Brandon Pili

Skylar Thompson - Emergency Third Quarterback

OCT. 28 PATRIOTS ELEVATE CONOR MCDERMOTT FOR WEEK 8 MATCHUP AGAINST MIAMI DOLPHINS - The New England Patriots welcoming back a familiar face to their scout team ahead of their Week 8 matchup with the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium.

The Pats have elevated offensive tackle Conor McDermott from their practice squad, marking his first game day appearance with the team this season. McDermott was signed to New England's scout team on Oct. 17.

McDermott's promotion will technically begin his third tour of duty with New England. Though he was drafted by the Pats in 2017, he did not play a regular season snap for the team during his rookie campaign. McDermott was released by the Patriots during final roster cut downs that September. The UCLA product was then signed to the Patriots 53-man roster in November 2022 off the New York Jets practice squad. McDermott started all six games he played for New England in 2022, allowing eight pressures without surrendering a sack.

For much of New England's preseason and training camp, he aligned with the team's starting offensive line. Despite being released with an injury settlement shortly before final roster cutdowns, the Pats have added his services to a unit which is in need of help at right tackle.

Though McDermott is typically at home at right tackle, he is capable of playing on the left, as well as at guard. Veteran lineman Michael Onwenu, who began the season earmarked for the starting spot at right guard, moved to right tackle with successful results.

Kickoff between the Pats and Dolphins is set for 1 p.m. ET in Miami Gardens.

OCT. 26 REAGOR ELEVATED TO 53-MAN ROSTER - After praising the progress of Jalen Reagor on Wednesday, Bill Belichick promoted the receiver to the Patriots' 53-man roster Thursday morning.

"He's been a really good scout-team player for us," Belichick said. "We've played against a lot of top receivers and he's gotten a lot of good opportunities - with some of the routes those guys run - to be featured a little bit. He's earned some playing time, which has come from his practice performance. So he's picking up the offense and we'll see how it goes. But he's a good talent, good guy to work with, glad we have him."

Reagor played 25 snaps in New England's victory over the Bills last week, compared to only three for 2022 second-round draft pick Tyquan Thornton. He caught one pass for 11 yards.

Reagor takes the roster spot vacated when the Pats waived talented quarterback Malik Cunningham, and then re-signed him to their practice squad.

OCT. 25 ROOKIE QUARTERBACK MALIK CUNNINGHAM CLEARS WAIVERS, RE-SIGNING WITH PATRIOTS - On the latest edition of “As the Quarterback Turns,” underrated rookie Malik Cunningham has cleared waivers and is re-signing with the New England Patriots practice squad.

Cunningham was waived by the Pats on Tuesday afternoon — move came as a surprise, especially after Patriots signed him to a three-year contract just two weeks ago prior to their Week 6 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders. However, Cunningham’s limited usage in that game, matched with the re-emergence of starting quarterback Mac Jones, may have made Cunningham’s services expendable. Still, his electrifying athleticism has not only made him a fan favorite, it has been of invaluable help to the Patriots on the scout team.

He will now rejoin the team as they prepare for their Week 8 matchup against the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

OCT. 25 PATRIOTS CAPTAIN CLAIMS TO HAVE NEVER SEEN STAR WARS - We've met people who don't particularly like Star Wars. And some who haven't seen all nine of the films in the franchise. But ... none? Never?

Patriots' veteran center and captain David Andrews provided a non-football stunner at Wednesday's media availability when - during a comical flurry of Halloween-related questions - he admitted to never watching even one second of Star Wars

"Honest confession, I've never seen Star Wars," Andrews said. "None of them, no. I'm not a big space guy."

Fair enough. But Andrews is obviously in the minority. The first Star Wars movie debuted in 1977 and the science-fiction saga has grown into one of the most successful and popular movie franchises ever.

Down here on Earth, Andrews and his fellow Patriots offensive linemen improved their play drastically in last week's upset win over the Bills.

OCT. 25 PATRIOTS COACH BILL BELICHICK ADVISES TEAM WILL ATTEMPT TO RE-SIGN QB MALIK CUNNINGHAM, IF UNCLAIMED, CLARIFIES POSITION ON TREY FLOWERS — The New England Patriots made some waves throughout the NFL waters on Tuesday when they waived undrafted rookie quarterback Malik Cunningham.

Should he remain unclaimed however, Patriots coach Bill Belichick confirmed on Wednesday that the Louisville product will not be unemployed for long.

“If he’s not claimed,” Belichick responded when asked if the team would attempt to re-sign Cunningham. He would add that Cunningham’s release was made as it was “best for the team.”

The move came as a surprise, especially after  Patriots signed him to a three-year contract just two weeks ago prior to their Week 6 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders. Either way, Patriots Nation will learn Cunningham’s fate in a Pats uniform on Wednesday afternoon, when the NFL’s waiver wire claims are revealed.

The Patriots also released veteran defensive end Trey Flowers on Tuesday, after his 21-day window of activation was ready to expire. While Belichick seemed quite open to welcoming back Cunningham, he did not seem so optimistic regarding Flowers.

"Trey's in a little different situation," Belichick said. "So, we'll just leave that where it is. There's other rules and other things involved. A much longer discussion."

OCT. 23 BELICHICK MUM ON "NEW" CONTRACT - For the first time in a long time, Sunday was a good day for Bill Belichick. His team broke a three-game losing streak with its upset of the Bills. He picked up his 300th career regular-season win, joining only George Halas and Don Shula in the exclusive club. And, before kickoff, reports surfaced about the coach agreeing last offseason to a new contract extension.

All of that should've - could've? - softened Belichick's grumpy exterior on Monday morning. But, of course, it didn't.

During his regular weekly radio appearance on WEEI, Belichick was asked about the report and his job security and/or status.

Grumbled Bill, “Yeah, I’m not talking about that.”

So much for a happy "Victory Monday."

OCT. 22 PATRIOTS LIST SIX INACTIVES, BILLS ALSO DECLARE SIX - The New England Patriots (1-5) are set for their Week 7 matchup with the Buffalo Bills (4-2) at Gillette Stadium.

The Pats enter this matchup hoping to rebound from their 21-17 defeat at the hands of the Las Vegas Raiders. Conversely, the Bills are fresh off a 14-9 victory over the New York Giants last Sunday night.

With just over an hour until the 1 p.m. ET kickoff, the Patriots and Bills have released their lists of inactives:

PATRIOTS INACTIVES:

QB Malik Cunningham

WR Kayshon Boutte

WR JuJu Smith-Schuster

T Calvin Anderson

LB Josh Uche

DE Keion White

Will Grier — Emergency Third Quarterback

BILLS INACTIVES:

S Damar Hamlin

LB A.J. Klein

T German Ifedi

G Alec Anderson

TE Quintin Morris

DT Ed Oliver

OCT. 21  PATRIOTS ELEVATE WR JALEN REAGOR, TRYSTEN HILL FROM PRACTICE SQUAD VS. BUFFALO BILLS - The New England Patriots have elevated defensive lineman Trysten Hill and receiver Jalen Reagor to the active roster from the practice squad in anticipation of their Week 7 matchup against the Buffalo Bills at Gillette Stadium.

Reagor is being elevated to the active roster for the third time this season. He was elevated prior to the game against Miami on Sept. 17 and dressed but did not play. The TCU product played on 14 offensive snaps in last Sunday's loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. Reagor joined the Patriots practice squad in Sept. after spending the past three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles (2020-21) and Minnesota Vikings (2022.) The former first-round pick has played in 44 regular season games with 24 starts and has 72 receptions for 799 yards with four touchdowns, returned 12 kicks for 255 yards and 61 punts for 488 yards with one touchdown.

Hill is a veteran of four NFL seasons with the Dallas Cowboys (2019-22) and Arizona Cardinals (2022). The 6-3, 310-pounder, was signed by New England to the practice squad on Oct. 4. He originally entered the NFL as a second-round draft pick (no.58 overall) by Dallas in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Central Florida. He was released by Dallas in Nov. 2022 and claimed off waivers by Arizona just one day later. This season, he signed with the Cleveland Browns as an unrestricted free agent in March. Hill began the 2023 season on the Cleveland practice squad before being released on Sept. 26. Overall, he has played in 31 regular season games with five starts and has accumulated 39 total tackles and 1 sack.

OCT. 20 TOM BRADY'S LAS VEGAS ACES TAKE WNBA TILE Yet another win in New York has given New England Patriots icon Tom Brady yet another championship ring.

Behind a 24-point, 16-rebound double-double from A'ja Wilson, Brady's Las Vegas Aces became the first back-to-back WNBA champions since 2001-02. A 70-69 victory over the New York Liberty at Barclays Center gave Vegas a 3-1 win in the best-of-five set and Wilson was bestowed the Finals MVP award.

The Vegas victory comes 16 days after Brady's minority stake purchase of the team was approved. He is listed as a co-owner of the team alongside Las Vegas Raiders partner Mark Davis.

OCT. 19: PATRIOTS RELEASE AMEER SPEED, FREES 53-MAN ROSTER SPOT - The New England Patriots announced on Thursday they have released defensive back Ameer Speed.

Speed was drafted by New England in the sixth-round (No. 214 overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Michigan State. The 6-3, 215-pound cornerback, played in five of the first six games of the 2023 season and has two total tackles on defense and one special teams tackle.

While Speed's release may be a bit surprising, considering his heavy usage on special teams, New England has a handful of players -- including cornerback Jack Jones, defensive end Trey Flowers and safety/special teamer Cody Davis (all of whom have been back practicing) -- eligible to return from either injured reserve, or the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. The 24-year-old's release may signify that the Pats are ready to incorporate Jones, Davis or Flowers back to the 53-man roster.

Should Speed clear waivers, he is a likely candidate to sign with the Pats practice squad.

OCT. 18 PATRIOTS RB PATRICK TAYLOR, DE WILLIAM BRADLEY-KING TO PRACTICE SQUAD - The New England Patriots are making a pair of additions to their practice squad in advance of their Week 7 matchup against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

New England, as first reported by MassLive's Mark Daniels, signed running back Patrick Taylor and defensive end William Bradley-King on Wednesday. At present, it is expected that receiver T.J. Luther and defensive tackle Manny Jones have been released from the scout team, as neither player was present for the team's practice session.

Taylor signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Memphis in 2020. The 25-year-old appeared in 27 games compiling 151 rushing yards, 48 receiving yards and one touchdown. The 6-7, 217-pound running back was waived by the Packers last week after having been elevated from their practice squad three times. Taylor also had a short stint on Green Bay's 53-man roster.

Bradley-King, also 25, was selected by the Washington Commanders in the seventh round (no. 240 overall) of the 2021 NFL draft. The 6-3, 254-pound defender has taken 83 pro-level snaps on defense, while logging seven tackles and one half-sack. He was released from Washington's practice squad on Saturday.

OCT. 17 PATRIOTS SIGN OL CONOR MCDERMOTT TO PRACTICE SQUAD - The New England Patriots welcoming back a familiar face to their scout team ahead of their Week 7 matchup with the Buffalo Bills on Sunday at Gillette Stadium.

The Pats, per Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald, are expected to sign offensive lineman Conor McDermott to their practice squad. McDermott, just two days shy of his 31st birthday, was spotted at Gillette Stadium prior to the start of Tuesday's practice before joining his teammates on the field while wearing a no. 75 Pats practice jersey.

McDermott's signing will technically mark his third tour of duty with New England.

OCT. 15 PATRIOTS LIST SIX INACTIVES, RAIDERS ALSO DECLARE SIX - The New England Patriots (1-4) are set for their Week 6 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders (2-3) at Allegiant Stadium.

With a great deal of speculation surrounding the quarterback position throughout the week, Mac Jones will remain the starter, with rookie Malik Cunningham designated as his backup. Second-year signal caller Bailey Zappe will be the emergency third quarterback, while Will Grier is a healthy scratch.

Having missed the entire week of practice while in concussion protocol, receivers Demario Douglas and JuJu Smith-Schuster have unsurprisingly been ruled out for Week 6. Second-year receiver Tyquan Thornton, who was designated to return from a stint on injured reserve earlier this week, will make his season-debut, despite being listed as questionable due to a shoulder injury. Thornton has spent the first five games of 2023 on injured reserve.

New England's offensive line continues to feel the injury effects, as starting guard Cole Strange (knee) and tackle Riley Reiff (knee) will be sidelined on Sunday.

With just over an hour until the 4:05 p.m. ET kickoff, the Patriots and Raiders have released their lists of inactives:

PATRIOTS INACTIVES:

WR Demario Douglas

WR JuJu Smith-Schuster

G Cole Strange

OL Riley Reiff

WR Kayshon Boutte

QB Will Grier

Bailey Zappe — Emergency Third Quarterback

RAIDERS INACTIVES:

CB Nate Hobbs

T Justin Herron

WR Kristian Wilkeson

S Christopher Smith

OLB Amari Burney

DT Nesta Jade Silvera

Aiden O’Connell - Emergency Third Quarterback

OCT. 14 PATRIOTS ACTIVATE WR TYQUAN THORNTON, ELEVATE JALEN REAGOR IN SERIES OF ROSTER MOVES - As actor Will Ferrell might say, the New England Patriots had themselves a “nice, little Saturday.”

In addition to signing hybrid quarterback/receiver Malik Cunningham to a three-year deal, the Pats also made a series of roster moves in advance of their Week 6 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium.

Second-year receiver Tyquan Thornton, who missed the first five games of the season while on injured reserve (shoulder,) has been activated and is expected to play on Sunday.

Following his selection by the Patriots in the second round (50th overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft, the Baylor product has been heralded as a potential deep threat due to his speed. However, Thornton saw the field sporadically throughout camp, due to a “soft-tissue” injury reducing his workload. He injured his shoulder during the second of two joint practices with the Green Bay Packers in August, forcing him to begin the season on IR. Though he has yet to make his 2023 debut, Thornton has 22 catches for 247 yards and two-touchdowns to his credit during his first season in New England. The 23-year-old is also a potential threat as a backfield carrier, having rushed three times for 16 yards and a score.

The Pats also elevated receiver Jalen Reagor and defensive lineman Jeremiah Pharms, Jr. from their practice squad.

Pharms is being elevated to the active roster for the third straight week — marking his final game for scout team eligbiiity. Last week against New Orleans, Pharms registered his first career NFL tackle.

Reagor is being elevated to the active roster for the second time this season. He was elevated prior to the game against Miami on Sept. 17 and dressed but did not play.

In order to accommodate the aforementioned roster moves, New England placed linebacker Matthew Judon (torn biceps tendon) and offensive lineman Tyrone Wheatley, Jr. (knee) on injured reserve.

OCT. 12 CHANDLER JONES SOCIAL MEDIA POST MENTIONS PATRIOTS - The sad saga of former Patriots' star Chandler Jones took a turn toward New England this week when he mentioned a member of the organization in a social media post. Jones, who was cut by the Raiders last week after a series of seemingly unhinged comments including a conspiracy theory about Aaron Hernandez' death, a trip to a mental health facility and an arrest, posted to his Instagram on Wednesday a photo of him in white sneakers standing on a black rug and the caption:

Protect Robert Kraft, on my soul.

While Jones has attacked Raiders management in a series of social media posts, he apparently has retained his affection for the Patriots owner.

From 2012-15, Jones was one of New England’s most electrifying defenders. He was drafted by the Patriots out of Syracuse in the first round with the 21st overall selection in 2012 and blossomed into Pro Bowl player and was voted onto New England’s All-2010s Team.

OCT. 11 RAMS SIGN FORMER PATRIOTS LINEBACKER - The Los Angeles Rams signed former New England Patriots linebacker Olakunle Fatukasi to their practice on Wednesday.

Last January, Fatukasi signed a reserve/future contract with the Patriots before being cut during training camp in August.

Fatukasi, the former Rutgers Scarlet Knight, has already spent time with four different teams prior to joining the Rams' practice squad despite just being in his second season as a professional. After spending last season as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers roster, where he played in 13 games, he bounced around last offseason, spending time with the Denver Broncos, Patriots, and Kansas City Chiefs, most recently before he was cut.

OCT. 11 FORMER PATS PLAYER SERGIO BROWN ARRESTED IN MEXICO - In a sad, but not surprising next chapter of a mystery involving Sergio Brown, the former Patriots safety has reportedly been arrested in Mexico in connection with the murder of his mother.

After being seen partying in the wake of his mother's September death, Brown was deported from Mexico Tuesday, taken into custody near San Diego and will return to Illinois to face charges. After family members originally reported Sergio and his mother, Myrtle, missing, the 73-year-old mother was found dead Sept. 19 of homicide near her home in a suburb of Chicago.

Brown was listed as "missing" by police, but quickly surfaced in a social media video in which he referenced the 2003 children's movie, Finding Nemo.

“They ain’t never seen ‘Finding Nemo’?" Brown said in a video in which he breaks into laughter. "Just keep swimming!”

Brown was later seen in another video earlier this month partying and dancing with twerking women at a club in Tulum, Mexico - seemingly carefree as the investigation into his mother’s murder continued.

Brown went undrafted out of Notre Dame and signed with the Pats as a free agent in 2010. He also played for the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills before retiring in 2016.

OCT. 6 PATRIOTS' DIVISION GETS EVEN TOUGHER WITH DOLPHINS TRADE - A tough AFC East just became more difficult - and unattainable? - for the Patriots, as the Dolphins' high-powered offense acquired another weapon. Miami on Friday morning traded for disgruntled Bears' receiver Chase Claypool.

The Dolphins are sending a 2025 6th-round draft pick to Chicago for Claypool and a '25 7th-rounder. The Bears gave up the 32nd pick in the 2023 draft to acquire Claypool from the Steelers.

Claypool made the NFL All-Rookie team in 2020 after catching 62 passes and nine touchdowns in Pittsburgh. His production, however, has dramatically declined and he caught only 18 passes in 10 games with Chicago.

He brings another talented weapon to Miami, which is already the NFL's highest-scoring team led by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, running back Raheem Mostert and receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Wadde.

The 1-3 Patriots trail the Bills and Dolphins in the AFC East, with two games remaining against Buffalo and a rematch in Miami Oct. 29. The Pats held the Dolphins to only 24 points but lost in Week 2 in Foxboro.

With the addition of Claypool and the loss of star cornerback Christian Gonzalez, New England's path to being competitive within its division just became more complicated.
