Patriots re-sign DL Daniel Ekuale; Starter in 2023?

Defensive lineman Daniel Ekuale has proven himself to be a versatile component within the New England Patriots front seven.

The Pats rewarded Ekuale for his efforts on Friday by re-signing him to a two-year deal, worth up to $6 million, per The Athletic. 

Ekuale originally entered the league as a rookie free agent out of Washington State in 2018. He spent his first two seasons with the Cleveland Browns, and his 2020 campaign with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Ekuale signed with the Patriots’ practice squad in September 2021.

Due to a suspension, the 29-year-old missed the Patriots 2022 season-opening loss to the Miami Dolphins, as well as their Week 2 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. 

Still, Ekuale proved himself a solid depth piece along the defensive line. The Washington State product played in all 15 games for which he was eligible, having compiled 14 total tackles (two for loss), three quarterback hits and two sacks. Ekuale’s work ethic and versatility caught the eye of his teammates and coaches as the season progressed.

“Dan’s done a good job for us. He’s played in multiple situations and as he's gained experience, he's given us some good quality depth there.”

Due to his multi-faceted skill set, Ekuale will make a strong case for a prominent roster spot in 2023. He will join Davon Godchaux, Christian Barmore, Lawrence Guy, Deatrich Wise Jr., Carl Davis and Sam Roberts, who also reside on New England’s current defensive line.
