Patriots bring back backup QB Brian Hoyer on two-year, $4M deal

Veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer is returning to the Patriots for another season on a two-year contract, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Monday.

Hoyer, 36, has spent seven seasons in New England spread out through his career. His return gives a veteran presence behind soon-to-be sophomore starter Mac Jones, who locked down the starting position during an impressive 2021 rookie campaign. Jones has gone on record to say he and Hoyer have become friends and that the seasoned QB is a mentor to him.

ESPN's Mike Reiss points out Hoyer's veteran presence and extended knowledge of the Patriots' playbook will be beneficial as the team's coaching staff takes on a new shape. With former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels departing to coach the Las Vegas Raiders — and taking some Pats personnel with him — head coach Bill Belichick has the daunting offseason task of putting a staff together. Having Hoyer back on the team no doubt gives the offense some stability.

Hoyer has thrown for 10,631 yards over his 13-year career, with 53 touchdowns and 35 interceptions in 75 games played, 35 of which he started.
