Patrick Mahomes addresses Kadarius Toney’s brutal night in Week 1 loss to Lions

The Kansas City Chiefs had an opening night to forget in their Week 1 loss to the Detroit Lions.

After falling behind 7-0 early thanks to an Amon-Ra St. Brown touchdown grab in the first quarter, the Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes began to look more like the team we've seen in recent years, outscoring Detroit 14-0 in the second quarter.

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, things went south in the second half, as they were unable to get much going offensively while the Lions found the end zone twice. One major issue Andy Reid's team couldn't seem to shake in this game was drops at brutal times, and no one had a rougher night than Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney.

Toney was targeted five times and finished the night with a brutal stat line of one catch for one yard with three ill-timed drops. Social media went off on Toney for the awful performance, but Mahomes, who was certainly done in by the many drops, took the high road and addressed the topic after the game, as ESPN's Adam Teicher revealed.

"I have trust in KT...Stuff's not always going to go your way," Mahomes said of Toney, per Teicher.

The Lions went on to pull off the impressive 21-20 win on the road, even though they gave the Chiefs the ball back with 2:30 remaining in the fourth quarter. With Kansas City at their own 45 and down just one, they only moved backward after a 17-yard pass to Skyy Moore was called back due to a holding penalty.

Two incompletions and a false start followed the penalty, leaving Mahomes and the Chiefs with a 4th-and-25 on their own 30. They were unable to convert.

It was apparent the Chiefs missed tight end Travis Kelce, who hyperextended his knee in practice on Tuesday. They didn't have a single player top 50 receiving yards, and only two had more than 31, with Marquez Valdes-Scantling catching two passes for 48 yards and Justin Watson hauling in two receptions for 45 yards.
