As Pewter Report’s Bailey Adams recently covered a couple of days ago, the Bucs could see a shakeup in the front office as they have a couple of candidates with ever-growing resumes being considered for top NFL posts. For Mike Greenberg, his expertise is in navigating the salary cap. Greenberg helped guide the team through the rocky waters of eating over $80 million in dead cap this year following Tom Brady’s retirement.

If there is an underrated part of the team’s recent winning ways, it has been his help in keeping the contention window open through managing contract restructures and the cap constraints of spending for a Super Bowl-winning team with high-end pieces.

Mike Greenberg has been with Tampa Bay for 14 seasons and was just recently promoted to assistant general manager before this season along with John Spytek. Before that, Greenberg spent two years as the vice president of football administration with a large part of his background prior as the director of football administration.

With those accomplishments serving as his leading bullet points for a general manager position, it is not hard to see why he is thought of highly, and what also spurred the interest of an NFC South division rival. “He came up on the cap side, but he has done more crossing over as he closes out his 14th season with the Tampa organization,” Breer recently wrote. “For years, the Bucs had the NFL’s cleanest cap, and Greenberg was able to help them pivot to a win-now model during Tom Brady’s three years. But this year came with a big reset of the cap. Greenberg also brings experience working in the league office, which will appeal to some owners.”

Mike Greenberg has spent a lot of time alongside general manager Jason Licht over the years. That means that he has been around and learned from one of the best general managers in football.

Licht has been able to build a winning football team in Tampa Bay from the ground up over the years and he continues to mine out talent in the NFL Draft and through shrewd free agent signings, such as quarterback Baker Mayfield this offseason.

Greenberg and Licht have a close relationship, so would he leave Tampa Bay for Carolina?

Panthers owner David Tepper is already known for being fiery and impatient, from throwing drinks at opposing fans to firing head coaches and general managers left and right in his short tenure owning the team. On the contrary, Mike Greenberg has a stable working environment and relative job security with the Bucs.
