Packers leading scorer still without work, but remains vigilant

Mason Crosby was the kicker for the Green Bay Packers for 16 seasons, and he was very good at his job.

In an offseason that saw the Packers move on from four-time MVP and future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, though, perhaps it shouldn't be surprising that Green Bay did not extend Crosby another offer after his most recent three-year, $12.9 million deal expired.

For the first time in his career, since being selected by the Packers in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft, Crosby is a free agent. He's without a home, but he's not without hope of playing in 2023.

“Never count anything out in this game,” Crosby recently told ESPN (h/t Forbes). “Weird stuff happens every year and you never know. You never know what’s going to happen.”

Crosby is right in that regard. Specifically, replacement kickers and quarterbacks seem to be in high demand throughout the course of the season when injuries happen. They're such specialty positions that not just anyone on the roster can step in and step up.

He may be nearing 39 years old, and yes, he may have lost some power on his once dominant leg. Crosby still believes he can be a valuable asset for a kicker-needy team, though.

“I’m getting myself ready for training camp and feeling good,” Crosby said. “I’m excited for what this next opportunity holds, and we’ll see what happens."

Crosby is Green Bay's all-time leading scorer, having put 1,918 points up on the board for the Packers. He knocked in 25 of 29 field goals last season but made only 1-of-4 from beyond  50 yards.
