The secondary has been a popular position for the Washington Commanders to address in mock drafts.

Cornerback has been a focal point, but in Pro Football Network’s three-round mock draft, they had the Commanders take Alabama safety Brian Branch in the first round.

“With the defense trending toward multiple safety looks and Bobby McCain allowed to depart, adding another captain-level presence next to Kamren Curl would be beneficial,” PFN writes. “Alabama’s Brian Branch can do it all, including lining up in deep coverage or the slot.”

McCain signed with the New York Giants in free agency.

In 2022, the junior safety had two interceptions and seven pass deflections. Branch also tallied 90 tackles, 14 tackles-for-loss and three sacks. His versatility would be a welcome addition to a Washington defense that needs to improve its secondary.

In the second round, Washington added Georgia tight end Darnell Washington. Washington, who is 6-foot-7 and 270 pounds, had 26 catches for 417 yards and two touchdowns in 2022. While his production doesn’t jump off of the paper, his size and untapped potential will at the very least give the Commanders a much-needed threat in the end zone.

“He can quickly find a role for Washington as a blocker but also develop into Logan Thomas’ replacement,” PFN writes.

Thomas had 39 catches for 323 yards and a touchdown in 2022.

With the 97th overall pick, Washington took edge rusher Isaiah McGuire from Missouri. McGuire had 8.5 sacks, 14 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles.

McGuire adds depth behind the team's very deep pash rush group and could be valuable on third-down passing situations.
