Matt Eberflus confirms Bears OL Cody Whitehair will ‘miss some time’

If things weren’t difficult enough for the Chicago Bears offense, they’ll now be without a key member of their offensive line for the foreseeable future after head coach Matt Eberflus announced on Monday that left guard Cody Whitehair will be out for an undisclosed period of time.

Whitehair, who’s arguably Chicago’s best offensive lineman, suffered a knee injury in Sunday’s 20-12 loss to the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium.

He was seen after the game with a brace on his injured leg and being transported to the team bus on a cart, via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

“Cody’s going to miss some time,” Eberflus told reporters on Monday. “He has a knee injury, we’re not sure exactly what that time frame is right now, but going forward, we’ll be with that same lineup that we had (to end the game Sunday). …The guy started 99 games and has missed two during his career. You talk about tough, a guy that really shows Chicago Bear toughness, that’s Cody Whitehair.”

The 30-year-old Whitehair had allowed just three pressures, three hurries and zero sacks on 189 offensive snaps this season. He’s Chicago’s highest graded run blocker (74.3) per Pro Football Focus, and he has PFF’s second-best pass blocking grade (63.6) behind only Larry Borom.

Whitehair has started every game he’s played in during his seven-year NFL career, only missing two games during the 2020 season. He’s started 16 or more games in five of the previous six years, playing 100 percent of Chicago’s offensive snaps in four of those years.
