Lovie Smith trying to convince Texans he deserves another season as head coach

The Houston Texans have been going through a revolving door of head coaches over the past few years, and current head coach Lovie Smith is hoping to avoid being the second consecutive one-and-done person to hold the position.

Ian Rapoport and Tom Pellisero of NFL Network reported on Saturday that Smith has been meeting with team owner Cal McNair to state his case for a second year on the job.

The Texans enter Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts with a 2-13-1 record and could finish with the league's worst record with another loss. A Texans win, combined with a Bears loss to the Colts, would give Chicago the league's worst record and the No. 1 overall pick.

According to the NFL Network report, there is growing frustration within the Houston organization about the lack of progress and "operational struggles." Despite the team's lack of impact talent, including at quarterback following the prolonged exit of former starter Deshaun Watson, Smith reportedly began every team meeting in training camp with a slide saying the Texans would be the 2022 Super Bowl champions.

So he clearly had high expectations for his team despite the lack of talent on paper.

Clearly, there has been no such progress.

This is not only Houston's third consecutive losing season, it is the third consecutive season in which it will fail to win more than four games.

Along with the lack of talent and organizational dysfunction, the Texans have already had four different head coaches since the start of the 2020 season going from Bill O'Brien (0-4 to start 2020), to Romeo Crennell (4-8 to finish the season), to David Culley (4-13 in 2021), to now Smith.

Another change would make five head coaches over a four-year stretch.

On the one hand, that sort of constant turnover is never a positive sign for an organization and at some point, you need to find some stability in that spot.

But you also have to have the right person for that job. Smith's recent track record as a head coach, in both the pros and NCAA, has not been overly impressive. The Texans are clearly going through a full rebuild and will probably be in a position to add a new potential franchise quarterback in the draft (most likely Alabama's Bryce Young). That might be a good time to just start everything over fresh.
