The Los Angeles Rams signed former Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby on Wednesday, inking the 39-year-old to the practice squad. Crosby, whose long-term contract with Green Bay ran out after the 2022 season, has been a free agent since the offseason. It’s the very first time he’s signed a contract with a team not named the Packers.

Despite failing to find a home to start the 2023 season, the veteran kicker told reporters that he was staying in shape to be ready to go at a moment’s notice.

“Never count anything out in this game,” Crosby told ESPN Wisconsin in the offseason. “Weird stuff happens every year and you never know. You never know what’s going to happen.

Kicker Lucas Havrisik, whom the Rams signed in Week 8 to replace former Cowboys kicker Brett Maher, missed two field goals and an extra point over the past two games. L.A. head coach Sean McVay told reporters that the team could elevate Crosby from the practice squad to kick on game day against the Baltimore Ravens this week. Despite that possibility, he also said it’s unlikely that they release Havrisik since they can elevate Crosby several times before they have to make room for him on the active roster.

“With where this team is and trying to build and do something special here down the stretch, it feels like a good opportunity to continue to chase this dream,” Crosby said on Wednesday, via ESPN. “It’s every kid’s dream to play professional [football]. I’ve been fortunate enough to play for a long time, but I don’t take it for granted. I love every opportunity I have.”

Green Bay selected Crosby in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft out of Colorado. He played his entire 16-year career with them before they opted to move on. In that time, he became Green Bay’s all-time leading scorer with 1,918 points while making 81.4% of his field goal attempts.

Crosby ends tenure with Green Bay after 16 seasons

Crosby was consistent throughout his longstanding career with the Packers, making 395 of his 485 career regular season field goal attempts, good for 81.4%. He has made 43 field goals from 50 yards or longer in his career, though just one of those came this past season.

In 2022, Crosby made 25 of his 29 field goal attempts, good for 86.2%. He also made 37 of his 39 extra point attempts.

Crosby also has extensive playoff experience, with the Packers making the playoffs 12 times since he began his career. In the postseason, Crosby has made 31 of his 35 career field goal attempts and all 70 of his extra point attempts.
