Lions CB Jerry Jacobs shares bold take on Jared Goff

Detroit Lions cornerback Jerry Jacobs is a big believer in quarterback Jared Goff following the 2022 NFL season.

"Jared Goff is the best quarterback, he's really top five in the NFC if you want to be honest if you pull the stat stuff and all that," Jacobs said during an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio, per Christian Booher of FanNation's All Lions. "I'm gonna be honest, I've played against a lot of quarterbacks. (Former Green Bay Packers star) Aaron Rodgers would be in my top five, but Jared Goff's up there. Everybody sleep on my dog and I love how he take it in, like he don't be cocky or nothing like that. He just soak it in and play ball to this game, that type of reaction. He's a great quarterback and I can't wait for him to, you know, go out and prove everybody wrong."

The Los Angeles Rams traded Goff to Detroit in March 2021, and he is coming off his best campaign, to date, with the Lions. Goff finished the 2022 regular season ranked fifth among qualified players with a 61.1 adjusted QBR, tied for fifth with 29 passing touchdowns and sixth with 4,438 yards through the air. With Goff's help, the 2022 Lions tallied an 8-2 record after Halloween and earned a spot in the upcoming regular-season opener at the Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 7.

"It's time to show what Detroit is made of," Jacobs said about that Thursday night encounter. "When we knew we were playing them in the season opener, (Lions head coach) Dan Campbell came in and said, 'They want us to lose, so what are we going to do?' We almost went to the playoffs and they just won the Super Bowl, so they're trying to see if we're really like that. We're ready, I know we're ready. Every time I hear we're playing the season opener against the Super Bowl team, we're ready to go out there and play ball and shock the world."

Lions general manager Brad Holmes revealed this spring that he's "had dialogue with (Goff's) agent" about a possible contract extension, as the 28-year-old is only signed through the 2024 season. While Holmes spent a 2023 third-round draft pick on signal-caller Hendon Hooker, Hooker suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee this past November and may not be ready to start for any team until some point next year at the earliest.

Meanwhile, Jacobs sounds ready for Holmes to lock Goff down via a lucrative extension as soon as this summer.
