Leonard Williams Returning to Seahawks? Re-Signing 'Won't Be Easy'
© Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

Like every team, the Seattle Seahawks are going to have to make several choices this offseason when it comes to player personnel.

One such decision is what to do with defensive lineman Leonard Williams. Acquired from the New York Giants via trade, Williams produced as soon as he landed in Seattle.

In just 10 games, Williams registered four sacks, 11 quarterback hits, and nine tackles for loss, as he was a constant contributor for former defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt, who has since left to take an assistant coaching role with the Philadelphia Eagles.

But now with Williams set to enter free agency, what the Seahawks do will make for interesting viewing. As such, ESPN has labeled Williams as Seattle's biggest offseason free agent decision.

"The Seahawks gave up a second-round pick (plus a 2025 fifth-rounder) when they acquired Williams and his expiring contract from the Giants in October, which left no doubt that they would try hard to re-sign him this offseason," ESPN writes. "But it won't be easy.

"The Seahawks are projected to be about $4 million over the cap before subtractions and restructures, and they're already paying big money to linebacker Uchenna Nwosu and defensive end Dre'Mont Jones. Williams outproduced and got more snaps than Jones in his 10 games with Seattle, making it hard to imagine him taking anything less than the $17.2 million yearly average that Jones is making."

If Williams is to return, one would have to imagine that he will want a sizable salary increase. Per Spotrac.com, Williams' market value is $16.7 APY which is going to push the Seahawks salary cap to the brink. Of course, it can be massaged to fit Williams in, but how Seattle potentially does so will be interesting.

Thought to be a playoff-caliber team this season, Seattle was close and narrowly missed out on the postseason. Now, with new head coach Mike Macdonald coming in, the roster could be considered one of the better ones in the NFC.

In three of their last four games, the Seahawks defense didn't give up more than 20 points, so there is defensive talent on the roster to make another playoff push.

But will Williams be a part of it in 2024? It's doable, but will be anything but easy.
