Kirk Herbstreit wants to have 'the best booth in television' at Amazon, but can he?

Amazon is officially in the football business, and this Thursday night, the NFL world will get its first glimpse of the Amazon booth featuring Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit.

Michaels is a voice NFL fans know well. He's one of the most legendary broadcasters in the game and has called games with the likes of John Madden, Cris Collinsworth and Mike Tirico.

Herbstreit is no slouch in his own right, but he made his name calling college football.

It's a dynamic booth; there's no doubt about it. Michaels is an old pro and Herbstreit should have no problem transitioning to covering the NFL, especially with his depth of knowledge as a former college quarterback.

But can they be the best booth out there? At least, according to Herbstreit, that's the goal.

"My internal goal — no matter what the critics say — is not to be, ‘Wow, they’re pretty good,’" Herbstreit told Andrew Marchand of the New York Post. "I want to be the best booth in television. NBA, MLB, college — I want to be the best. I’m not doing this to just limp across the finish line and say, ‘I made it.’

"My goal is to be the best booth in television, and I feel like I’m working with Al and [executive producer] Freddy [Gaudelli], I don’t know why we can’t be."

Herbstreit and Michaels certainly have a chance to be the top booth covering the NFL, but they will have plenty of competition.

It stands to reason that their main competition will be Joe Buck and Troy Aikman covering "Monday Night Football" for ESPN. Sure, the duo is new to ESPN, but they've been calling prime-time games together for years. Love them or hate them, they exude prime-time confidence.

Tony Romo and Jim Nantz have a great thing going with CBS as well. Nantz is an iconic and respected broadcaster, and Romo's popularity as a broadcaster may be unmatched right now. His knowledge and enthusiasm for the game as a former quarterback make him a unique draw.

It's tough to argue against Herbie and Michaels, but one imagines it may take them at least a season or so to build their chemistry.

They'll start that process on Thursday night in a huge matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers.
