Kirk Cousins just as 'shocked' as Falcons fans over first-round pick
Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Atlanta Falcons fans weren't alone when their team selected Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. at No. 8 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.

According to NFL Network's Jane Slater, Falcons' freshly signed veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins was "just as shocked and disappointed" as the rest of the world when his successor was drafted in the first round.

Atlanta's decision to draft a quarterback with their first pick is such an off-the-wall move considering they already signed Cousins to a four-year, $180 million contract with $100 million guaranteed in NFL free agency.

That means Penix will spend at least the first two years of his career sitting behind Cousins.

Not only were many NFL fans and Cousins stunned, but Penix was also surprised when he heard his name called at No. 8.

"I'm not gonna say I knew it was coming, but I knew once the phone call came through," Penix told reporters moments after he was selected.

Penix, a Heisman runner-up last year, makes the jump to the pro level after throwing for 9,544 yards, 67 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions while completing 65% of his passes in two seasons with the Huskies.
