J.J. Watt Clarifies Houston Texans Return Comments
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

“I’ve had 12 great years in this league and I’m very thankful to have walked away healthy and playing great,” Watt said. “I told DeMeco last year, I said, ‘Don’t call unless you absolutely need it, but if you ever do call, I’ll be there.’ And he knows not to call unless he absolutely needs it. This is the last year I’ll tell him that, because I’m not going to keep training the way I’ve been training, but he knows that if he ever truly does need it, I’ll be there for him. I don’t anticipate that happening — they’ve got a very good group.”

Would J.J. Watt Actually Return to The Houston Texans?

The chance to play alongside wunderkind quarterback C.J. Stroud and for defending NFL Coach of The Year Demeco Ryans — one of Watt’s former teammates has to be alluring for Watt, who retired following the 2022 season.

But, Watt explains that the Texans would need to be in a world of hurt for him to consider an NFL comeback.

“The only thing you’d ever come back for now is if the exact right situation happened where you have a chance to do something you have never done before,” Watt said. “That’s the only scenario that could ever bring you out because you also have to look at the opposite side of that and all the bad s--- that could happen.”

If Watt does wind up suiting up for the Texans this season, he would have a legitimate chance at chasing a Super Bowl ring.

As Pro Football Talk points out, “Watt’s comments come just days Texans General Manager Nick Caserio was asked by Pat McAfee about a potential Watt comeback. Caserio did not rule out the possibility.”

Watt currently has 114.5 career sacks, and seems to have left the door cracked open to try for more with the Texans in 2024.
